President Jonathan's daughter's wedding: Nigerians Fault distribution of Gold-plated iphones

The two-leg wedding of President Goodluck Jonathan’s daughter, Faith and Godswill Edward, son of Cross River State monarch ended yesterday in Abuja, leaving on its trail a dust of controversy.

At the first leg in Otuoke, Bayelsa state, there were unconfirmed rumours that the couple was given 80 cars as wedding gift.

Then yesterday at the reception in Abuja, guests went away with the gift below.

The iphone pieces are replicas of the 53 Aso Rock was accused to have ordered last year to mark Nigeria’s independence anniversary at a cost of N662 million. Each one then was said to have cost bewteen 3,000 pounds and 50,000 pounds.

Many NigerianEYE readers however faulted the show of affluence in the land stricken with hunger, sickness and insecurity and accused the president of using public funds for such luxurious wedding take home gifts.

Below are some of the comments randomly picked.

This is absolutely rubbish when millions of Nigerians are out there dying and suffering.
Of what sense does this contribute to what people are going through in the country. Hmmmmmmm. God judge them all. Yours truly Mr. Fix it.

Straight Spoken
This nonsense MUST STOP!!! The greatest tragedy is that this naked display is made by a man who Nigerians voted for because he grew up 'having no shoes'. The millions that now have no shoes are slowly losing their feet, while those who have are being given the more they do not need. There is a madness creeping into this man and his family, and we watch how the gods will make them pay.

Show of affluence in the land stricken with hunger, sickness and insecurity. They can never be peace in a land so rife with inequality.

Uwa Omo says 'wow, this is a total waste of money. for all we know he spent the national funds for such extravagance, and the problem here is that the people he is distributing these phones to dont even need it. imagine how many people N750,000 to 12.5 million (which was spent on one so called phone) can feed'

This is why our youth turn to crime. How much can they tolerate?

  1. To correct you all, they were given to guest from Ă  friend of the President. It was someone's contribution to show the first family that they are wishing them well. Lets stop feeding the good people of Nigeria false news ; most of the gifts, decor etc are people's contributions & not from your money.

  2. Please lets stop exibiting our ignorance. They are gifts given by some of President's friends & not national funds has you all call it. If you have ever attended Ă  wedding before or from this part of our world; you will realise that people contribute towards weddings & your positions or calibre in the society will gain you more gifts & people trying to sponsor your weddings at all cost & to also outdo themselves. The first family is not an exemption. Pray that God will favor you & your family when its your turn & Please dont hate.

    2. Yetunde, If u don't know, u better know now. It's very wrong for any public officer to accept such gifts under the code of conduct for public officers. Some of those referred to as President's friends if u find out must have done what they did 4 one ulterior motive or the other. It could have been to curry favour from the Presidency for consideration for juicy contracts or public appointments. Or it could also have been a mark of appreciation for the benefit they've already enjoyed. ab

    3. I dont agree that these were gifts from friends. i have been to weddings before and i know that when friends or family members are donating souvenirs they usually write donated by so and so on the gift they are given out. this is not on the iphone neither is it on the other package. the gifts i am seeing on here is definitely not a donation but from the sponsors of the wedding.

Chyk its u who really needs to wake up! the worst form of poverty they say is poverty of the mind. we have rich individuals in Nigeria who can afford to sponsor the iphone souvenir for Mr president, take it or leave. and these individual don't have anything to do with national treasuries! When Odili the past River state governor had his daughter's wedding, do u want to know how many number of tear rubber cars they got as gifts! Here we are talking about the president not any governor! Pleaseeeeeeeee. wake up from this poverty mentality that has crippled u! what is customized iphone! mtchewwwwwww.

  7. Yetunde or what ever you guys call yourself, I advice you stop saying nonsense because am quite sure you are part of the presidency, the iphones was given to guest from the president family, so why come here and pretend to be part of the masses.
It wasn't a rumorn, an inside source confirmed it that, its jonathan that gave out gold platted iphones. Only God will judge you all, and if tomorrow the wedding crashes, you people will be looking for one grate grandmother or a witch some where, its the tears of the masses that caused it because the bible said God hears the cry of both the widows and ophans.
Please, stop coming here to lie to yourself not nigerians.

  12. Our problem in Nigeria is that almost 93% are illiterate.Forget the academic qualifications that we claim to have. This IPAD issue is being blown out of proportion by our Journalists. What is a big deal in distributing IPADs at the wedding ceremony of our president daughters wedding?. As a matter of fact JEG, might not know about it,. it might be given and funded by one of our numerous contract seekers. As a banker i knew what goes to corporate gifts in our budgets every year. Please let us get things straight. I am NOT President GEJ'S FAN.I dislike is simplicity form of administration.LEISEFAIRE ,style. but that is the position of things. Our level of poverty is what is witch haunting us, how much is an IPAD? less than 150 US DOLLAR. I PITY OUR COUNTRY.

    2. Femi no hard feelings o. From your write up above, you are definitely among the 93%.
The issue here is iphone not ipad.

  15. @MR Femi fakunle as much as I support your comment about the cost of the phone, but I will disagree with you saying its just a gift without his awareness. Fine, but do you know that a good leader always remembers his followers in all thing. won o fe o ni ilu, o un da rin..(Yoruba Proverb) didn't president know that people don't like him? he should concentrate on how to please the people. And publicly announce to renounce any speculative gifts like Gov. Fashola that refused news paper publishing his father obituary and during his birthday. Please we need to do the right thing bcos the coming generation are watching us.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Femi Fakunle, u said it all. This issue of iPhone gift at the wedding ceremony of the president's daughter is been blown out of proportion. The president might not have a clue to all this. We should accept the fact that Mr. President is a personality regarded in high esteem. This gift might come from some well wishers, so let's stop blabbing ignorantly. Well know that in this country, wedding of such magnitude will be sponsored by well-meaning Nigerian who have some due respect for Mr. president. Let's accept accept the truth and stop casting stones.

  17. The problem is nt IPAD but d GOLDEN IPAD. Do u know d gold content of each of the ipad & its worth. Don‘t be surprised dat d GOLD content on each of the IPAD is enough to catter for a State budget for two months. Another style of looting meh

  19. Do you drive a new car or an expensive tokunbo? Have you built a house or live in an expensive rented apartment. Do you wear expensive clothes or jewelries. If there is anything expensive about u then u are guilty bcos there are lot of people around you that does not have food to eat or where to stay. U shouldn't exhibit ur money at all instead give it to poor people around you. People like Dangote are affecting lives and if they also donate to a wedding it is not a misplaced priorty. These things are done at other levels, nobody talks about it. The accusers are most times the ones that would do worse that is if they are not faulting in little positions they find themselves. Leave GEJ alone.

  20. This is bad belle .Nig porverty did not start with GEJ. It statrted from shagari austerity measure and the likes of umarudiko then Babangida and Abacha.even Obasanjo rule did not help the matter so you cannot crusify the president fo celebrating his dauther see the sincererity .she is even adopted and such a man is still showing this level of love .I beleive that some of these critivs will distribute aeroplane if they have the opportunity.Nigerians I cant ever believe them and their critisism .its all fake .jelousy

    1. So because Nigeria's problem did not start with him, he is free to do what ever he likes and also drain Nigeria of the little she has left?
No body is saying he should not celebrate his daughter's wedding, but with the "salary" he is paid its a little obvious that spending such money for gold plated iphones was definitely not from his pocket or from the so called salary

  21. Even if such gift must be given, it shouldn't be phones bcs nt all those wo attended that wedding have a good financial.. distributing these golden phones to them means killing the receivers bcs armrobbers cld easily attack them to get the phone. Something u can'tbe bold to use in the public why shld u ve it and what is the essence of it ?? I darely say those who received this gifts risks their lives for security reason bcs even in d european countinent which the world recognised as well secured countries ppl still lose their lives for displaying xpensive jewelries in the public how much more a country like nigeria where ppl are born with qualified criminal certificate. So I advice those who think they ve received the best gifts of their lives to buried their phones alive at home not to use it neither display to public or be proud to ve being a party of GEJ daughter's wedding for their safety.

  25. From most of our writeup here, it is obvious we have accepted things the way they are. corruption is now seen as a norm and a normal thing in Nigeria. if one tries to dispute it, then that person becomes the idiot of the village. What a pity.

  26. Truth is, given the opportunity GEJ has to be Nigeria's, every single person here talking will do worse. Am sure GEJ criticized OBJ when money was lavished on Segun's wedding which didn't ever last. I agree the issue here isn't the fact that the iPhones were plated or customized or might be iPads, the issue is, there was a lavish wedding and Nigeria is on the down low. A country which could be up there with the first world is battling hunger, ASUU strike, corruption, faulty written and spoken English among leaders and worse yet, Boko Haram. I feel we all have failed Nigeria in one way or the other. A banker who cannot write write English a man telling his fellow citizen to shut up because he feels he is richer than him and a yoruba girl who feels contribution towards a lavish wedding which feeds multitudes for a day and Divource is stamped a few weeks later is okay. This is all messed up. We probably have more churches and mosques than the entire world combined but what do we know of human kindness? We go to church Sunday morning and curse in traffic on the way home. We all have failed Nigeria and honestly, I can go on an entire day writing.
