Sack threat will fail - ASUU replies Jonathan

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the threat by the Federal Government to sack university lecturers would not only fail but also worsen the situation and “another long path to make the strike linger more than necessary.”

With the threat, ASUU said it was evident now that the Federal government was not ready to implement any resolutions it reached with the union.

Speaking with newsmen, ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu said It is a pity if the federal government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with union.

"This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000. We are not in Military era. The Military tried it and failed. This one will fail again.” ASUU said.

They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut the universities; it was the school management that ordered the students to go back home.”

ASUU added that the FG was wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country by failing to perfect the resolutions so that classes could resume in the schools.

Making reference to the failure of the government to honour the agreements it entered with resident doctors and health workers after they suspended their strikes, the union said it had reasons to be wary of the government, adding that the threat was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting for the government for a positive reaction.

“With the latest action, the government has shown that it is not committed to all it has been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200bn is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don’t do that now, when do they want to do it?” Aremu said.

  9. If that money was meant for their (Politicians) welfare, it would have been released immediately for their devouring, but for education - no way!!! Jonathan should resign and the education minister is one of his thugs who has chosen to create problems in his home state of Rivers instead of facing his ministerial job. Useless people.

  11. Imagine the kind of brains our ministers have. they think being a lecturer is as being appointed a ministers, where any crook irrespective of his discipline can be appointed to head any ministry. I really pity Nigeria bcos her obituary is around the corner. if our leaders are wise, they should see the handwriting on the wall. History is about to repeat itself in Nigeria. One advice for GEJ; some of your cabinet members want your downfall through their ill advice and psychophantic actions that turn the masses against your administration, better apply caution now in dealing with this ASUU issue.

  14. What do u get when u make a political thug a minister of Education? in the history of rivers people, The only tribe that does not value education is the Ikwerres and Wike is from that tribe....I think Jonathan is highly doomed to fail!
7 governors leaving a party and threatening to sack ALL university lecturers; all in one week? We are all paying for voting for a man with NO SHOES!!!!

  15. Never in history have we gotten a thug like this as a federal minister! this is not the way to go, he is a disappointment and the Govt. should owe up to its commitments to ASUU.
Obviously this Minister, i doubt whether he has the mental capacity and the requisite discipline to handle such a sensitive position as a minister of a federal republic.
where did Mr. President got this one from? Unfortunate!

  16. Mr Wike is probably not qualified to even be a lecturer. That can be inferred from the way he talks. I'm not surprised that this man is heading education ministry because this government don't care about competency and modesty. Maybe he thinks that dealing with ASUU is the same thing with using Compol Mbu, the five lawmakers led by Bipi, Obuah and militants with serious backing from the presidency and IGP to cause confusion in Rivers state. ASUU is not a political party and you can not intimidate them. Ike and his principal GEJ should know that ASUU is an association of learned individuals, not touts. FG and ASUU has reached another agreement, let true representatives of the FG sign it and you said it's outrageous. I wonder what you people want. perhaps to deceive ASUU again into calling off the strike and go back to your normal business of not honouring agreements. ASUU, please fight on. It's a sacrifice you're making on behalf of our dear country Nigeria. God will be with you guys all the way.

  17. It's disappointing having an academic lecturer as a President who ought to reason more than a trained personnel. Unless he doesn't go back to the classroom, he would surely be booed after his tenure. My assessment of this present group of educated government officials is that they went to schools but they never received EDUCATION because university education gives enlightenement which illuminates & guides utterances and refine decisions. ASUU should also know that two wrongs can never make a right. Strike is permanent in this country, it will still continue. I beg you to go back to school for the sake of your students, they are already frustrated . The people are in solidarity with your struggle.adumekwe gertrude-badagry

  18. They did it in Unilorin and since then there has been peace. There are thousands and thousands of qualified academics in Nigeria and abroad looking for job. ASUU cannot tolerate what they are asking the government to do. How can monies be warehouse without appropriation? How can the Attorney General sign an agreement with a Trade Union? Can ASUU accept their questions to be set by the university registrar? Can they allow the university bursar to mark their scripts? After meeting with the president of Nigeria, what further assurances do they need?

  20. bulk of idiots are conceived dat the strike is political. the moni asuu are akin for is it jonathans moni? set of idiotas at the govt

  21. My advice to everyone is to go and read this demonic resolution that ASUU is refering to and tell Nigerians how it will improve the Universities and benefit the Great Nigerian Students. If you have ever taking time to read it as I have, you will definitely see that the resolution was designed to make it almost impossible for poor parents to send their children to the universities while enriching the university lecturers. ASUU should be reasonable. If oil & gas workers decide to behave like them and then shutdown all the multinational and indegenious oil and gas company for 5 months, where will the money to pay them come from? They should go back to the classrooms if they have the interest of Nigerian students at heart as they claim since the federal government has met up to 60% of their OUTRAGEOUS demands. While there, the can continue to negotiate further. They should also demonstrate that they will not add to the demands, like they have just done, after all their demands are met. ASUU is also not sincere, & the federal government does not trust the leadership of ASUU. My take is that ASUU is delebrately being bi-partisan and systematically helping to wreck the government the claim is already wrecked. However, ASUU should be put on notice that we all make up the government, including them and that if the government fails in the education sector, they have contributed to it inadvertently.
