Call off strike within one week or face sacking, Jonathan tells ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has been given one week ultimatum to call off the ongoing strike.

The directive was given today, in Abuja by the acting Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike while speaking with journalists.

The union has been on strike since July 1 over the non Implementation of a 2009 agreement with the federal government.

According to reports, the lecturers at their NEC meeting last week in Kano, demanded that government should pay the four-month salary arrears being owed varsity lecturers while there should be immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offerred by the goverment to public varsities, starting with the release of N100bn this year, before the strike can be called off.

A demand the acting Minister Wike had described as ,”outrageous.”

Meantime, ASUU had said it would meet with President Jonathan on the decisions reached at its NEC meeting before any announcement will be made concerning the 5 months old strike.

How can creating proof of an agreement you had made be seen As outrageous.
Lecturers have not been paid for 5months & you want them to resume with which money to feed themselves and energy .
Sorry Mr president you are joking. Even if you order for resumption, no activity will be going on & lecturers will not teach. Use your brains & resolve this matter. Not order & force. Dont fool yourselves.
They fought for the general welfare of nigerian institution both for students and staff asking for their salary arrears is not Outrageous. How do you expect them to teach without money in their pocket, no glucose in the head , no food in the stomach.
Please lets be reasonable in things we should be reasonable in and not to use order and force to cover our inadequacies

  14. Sometimes, when these dealers that claim to be our leaders embark on long medical trips abroad, they still come back and collect all their entitlements. How about the endless vacations and other luxury trips they embark upon? Let's not even talk about all the financial scandals we hear everyday involving our public officers and their cronies. Are they not outrageous??? Wike and GEJ we need answers. FG should pay ASUU their allowances. They had an agreement and this current strike is the fall-out of non-implementation of previous agreement with ASUU. Had FG done the right thing, there would have been no strike. FG should fund our schools and use all the relevant agencies of government to supervise and monitor the way the money is spent. If any vice chancellor or teaching or non-teaching staff is found to corruptly enrich himself or herself with the fund, let the law punish such a person. I believe that sanity can still return to our institutions especially if the government is ready to sincerely fund our institutions and also empower the EFCC, ICPC, NPF to be truly independent and discharge their duties without fear or favour. Maybe the people who will participate in the sovereign national conference should enshrine it in our constitution that if you are a public officer in Nigeria, your children should neither attend private schools or study abroad from primary to tertiary level. May God bless Nigeria!

  15. FG Prove Your Integrity by sealing an agreement you have made. What is the big deal in sealing an agreement you have made, if only you are truthful and ready to implement the agreement seal it, create a proof. We are tired of you fooling us, it is because your children are schooling overseas, you want to sack the lecturers do you know the length of time it takes to train a seasoned lecturer where will u get the ones you want to replace them with, from motor parks, It is because your children are studying overseas, what do you care

That was how you intimidated one of your younger brothers to join your so called 'Ogboni' before you can help him , but thank God the young man said to hell with your assistance and your Ogboni. That's how you have been intimidating young men and women to join your Satanic Ogboni before you can help them in your native Obio Akpor. Wike, for your information, ASUU is bigger and greater than your Ogboni.

  22. While we are at this strike thing, we MUST remember that there is a regulation that says NO WORK NO PAY. If lecturers refuse to work then they should not expect to be paid. This is their own sacrifice for the nation as the students have sacrificed 6 months of their life to ensure that things get better.
As for sacking of lecturers en-mass , they should know that all lecturers are a special breed of highly qualified people. replacing them will definitely not be an easy asignment weither from within or from without!

  23. Mr GEJ is surrounded by thieves, thugs, militants, just imagine this "wiked" was shouting when passing the so call threat on assu. Can some1 tell me the difference between asari and "wiked", anyway their days are numbered come 2013 Gej and his company will be in his village and there wont be room for him in assu

  24. Kingsley Kuku, remember your days in UNAD - the then OSUA, remember your stand as an activist and your stand against the Ondo state government during the strike of 93/94, and 94/95. Now that you've joined them you are the one talking like this! Unbelievable!

To the visionless leaders and the shortsighted and dishonourable minister of education, it is clear beyond doubt that you have nothing to offer this nation. If in a place where things work such people like you cannot be in that office. If by chance or by luck that they get there, this ASU strike would have removed them from office. Now you are talking that members of ASU should forget their pay, you are the one who is supposed to lose your job and all emoluments as needed sacrifice for allowing things like this to degenerate into a prolonged industrial action under you watch. It is a clear show of your inability, ineptitude and insensitivity to the plight of both the students and the lecturers. If Asu's should not be paid for demanding for a just cause, how can you justify a senator or rep member that is sleeping always in hallowed chambers and will still collect jumbo pay at the end of the month? So, you and your presidoo, Adoke and Finance minister did not see anything wrong in that, even Hon. Mark failed to mark them down, but happy and swift to pay for slouching around the hallowed chambers.
