Anambra Election: SSS detains El Rufai at Awka

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Malam Nasir el-Rufai, was on Saturday in Awka prevented from moving out of his hotel room to monitor the Anambra Governorship Election currently ongoing.

El-Rufai said at the `Finotel Hotel' where he lodged that some armed men of the State Security Service (SSS) restrained him from moving out of the hotel to monitor the election.

He said:"I arrived in Awka by 7 p.m. on Friday and had a brief session with the APC candidate, Sen. Chris Ngige. When I came out to have my dinner, I saw three heavily armed SSS officers at the hotel.

"I asked them why they were following me; they told me that they were protecting me because Awka is not safe.

"I told them that I came with my own security. This morning, as I was about to have breakfast, they blocked the corridor and tried to restrain me from going out but I pushed by and went to the restaurant to eat.

"After my breakfast, I will be going to the APC Situation Room in town to monitor the election. I am being unlawfully detained here,'' he said.
One of the SSS men entered the restaurant and confiscated the reporter's tape recorder and deleted the recorded interview before returning it to her.

When contacted on telephone, the Director of SSS in the state, Mr A.U. Okeiyi, confirmed the report, saying that el-Rufai was being protected.
"el-Rufai is not an ordinary person. If anything happens to him, they will blame the security,'' he said.

Heavily armed security men were seen guarding the premises of the hotel.

NE monitored the situation and gathered that he was only released after 23 hours, the furious statesman however took to micro-blogging website, twitter to share the news of his release, also calling Gov Peter Obi a fool.

  5. Even Governor Obi's movement was restricted. What was rufai doing in anambra state? He should have been made to visit kirikiri. These are the people causing confusion in this country to make others look bad

  9. Some of you guys are saying rubbish. Anambra people are good people; Peace loving and God fearing set of people; they are predominantly catholic and protestant Christians; they are not cannibals besides; they are not hostile to the visitors.

I am not Anambrarian but I have visited almost all the LG areas including Nnewi, Iyeala, Idiato, Nnewi, Ikologu, Ekulobia, Onitsha etc. I never experienced hostility amongst them also, El-Rufai understands everything before going there therefore, a reasonable person against the above senseless goats will not say “he was prevented for his own security sake” after all he confirmed of having his own security.

No iota of doubt the election was officially rigged as usual very unfortunate, a man I used to have unended respect for; Peter Obi rubbishes himself and his entire generation with this.

President Goodluck Jonathan is trying his best however, people like Peter Obi etc will never allow the man to get ideal recognitions considering ghoulish acts like this.

We are waiting to see how it ends.

  11. This happened in the state of the self-same governor Obi who was shouting to death the Gov Fashola 'deported' Ibo people from Lagos!!! What is the difference between this and the one he alleged of Fashola. I saw and recorded him on Channels TV today and can only say his utterances were nothing but a complete and total show of gross, base level shame.

Obi totally destroyed whatever case, if any, can be purported against Fashola. El-Rufai's treatment in Awka confirms my view that the case Obi tried to make against Fashola was nothing but politics to smear Ngige, tarnish his image as an Ibo who sold out to a non-ibo party that 'maltreats' ibo people. This new show was borne out of total desperate. if there was in atom of respect left in me for Obi, he has by his own action sucked it out.

    What a tragedy.
