Okonjo-Iweala is a dictator — ASUU

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has branded Minister of Finance, Okonjo-Iweala ‘a dictator’ for her insistence that Federal Government would not release an extra kobo to fund education.

Members of the union who staged a peaceful protest at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) on Friday, chanted songs and displayed placards condemning the posture of the Minister.

Some of the placards carried by the lecturers read “Okonjo-Iweala, take it or leave it is a dictator’s stance on labour industrial negotiation”, “Responsible government respects agreement” and “No nation can develop without genuine commitment to education”.

Speaking with journalists after the protest, Acting Chairman of ASUU ESUT chapter, Uche Omeje, said they were protesting because the federal government has refused to implement an agreement it freely went into with ASUU in 2009 as well as their memorandum of understanding of 2012.

“They have been dragging their feet and we are not happy. Such statement like ‘take it or leave it’ cannot promote education. No nation can develop by not having a genuine commitment to education, research and education.

“The Minister of Finance made a very clear statement that take it or leave it, federal government is not going to release extra ten kobo to fund education. We are saying that to make such a statement is clearly the mindset of Brettonwoods institution or Washington consensus. It is the mindset of a dictator” Omeje said.

He noted that if any nation must develop, it must show commitment to education, adding that it is not an issue of ‘take it or leave it’.

Omeje regretted that Nigeria occupies the bottom rock of nations that spent so less in education, stressing that the percentage of GDP federal government spends on education is so low when compared to other nations.

ASUU should please press home their needs. We need better education so people like Emmy can write good english.

  9. @emmy, I am very disappointed in your statement. Which money were they given before? I dont think you appreciate the extent of decay and neglect in our educational system, while your government spends billions on allowances for senate and house of reps, armoured cars for a minister, homes for senate president and house speaker, internet spying program, and the list goes on. The future of Nigeria is doomed without a functional educational system, and your university system is the pinnacle for education.

  10. If ASUU is not externally being influenced, by now the strike would have been called off. Since the agreement was signed in 2009, nothing concrete had been done yet despite several strikes and calling off by ASUU. But this time around, despite the demonstration of goodwill by this present government and a practical release of several billions and a roadmap to do more, ASUU is adamant. This an issue of jacob' voice but Esau, body. To be sincere, if ASUU has the interest of education sector and the students at heart, then strike should be called off at once!. This govt has done more than all what the previous govts have done.several sectors are equally calling for a bail out.

  12. ASUU SHOULD REMOVE THE LOG IN ITS EYES BEFORE COMPLINING OF THE SPEC IN THE MINISTER'S EYES. I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT ASUU & ITS MEMBERS CAN BE DESCRIBED AS MODELS OF PROBITY, INTEGRITY, AND PRUDENCE IN MANAGING RESOURCES OR EVEN DILIGENCE IN DOING THEIR PRIMARY TASK OF LECTURING. ASUU IS AS MUCH THE PROBLEM WITH UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA AS IS THE GOVT. I POSESS A MASTERS DEGREE FROM REPUTABLE NIG. VERSITIES AND I KNOW WHAT AM TALKING ABOUT. ASUU IS NOT THE MESSIAH OF NIG. UNIVERSITIES HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. THEY ARE A BOUNCH OF RAPACIOUS BLACKMAILING EXACTORS OF OUR COLLECTIVE WEALTH UNDER THE GUISE OF IMPROVING THE STATE OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES WHILE DOUBIOUSLY DRAGGING STATE VERSITIES ALONG. SHAME ON ASUU!

  19. It is a big shame that we have people like Iwe-ala (the anger of the land) handling our economy.
If they have their children schooling in the country they will feel the impact of clossing down universities indefinitely.
If a quater of the amount spent on maintaining most of this unproductive political office holders some of wnom are agents of world bank and imf like iweala is spent on edication, our educational sector will be much more better than what it is now.
As for the selfish interest on the part of lecturers as expressed in some quaters, it should not take anyone aback. In a country where the rulling class are buzzy looting the treasury dry the lecturers who are requestong for proper working environment should not be branded selfish.
Selfishness should be ascribed to the politocal office holders who despite the exhorbitant amount they collect as salaries, still use all other criminal means to still loot the treasury thereby creating artifitial scarcity of funds meant for other things such as education.
They are the actual enemies of this country and not ASUU.

  26. Emex! As usual you are still portraying your hatred for the north. You keep blaming the north for something as silly as comment on NE page. Can you see how you are brewing tribal biogtry and hatred among people living in peace? Well, it won't take you anywhere. And the supreme Lord will take proper care of you at the appropriate time. Lastly, we are watching to see if you have the power to stop or give authority to any being be it from the North, South, East or West. I'm warning you again to stop associating the North with everything that your imbecilic brain tells you to! We northerners have reputation unlike any other tribe in this country. We can't sit and watch you soil our hard earned reputation. We will surely fight back! The era of silence is over. To be fore warned is to be fore armed. Take note. It's Suraj
