SSS grills teenage stowaway’s mum

The mother of the 13-year-old stowaway, Ricky Daniel Ohikhena, who on Friday hid in the tyre compartment of an Arik plane on a flight from Benin to Lagos, was on Monday quizzed for hours by a combined team of security operatives from the Department of State Security Service and aviation security.

The mother, Evelyn, who confirmed that she was quizzed by the SSS operatives, said her son was a nice boy who never displayed any tendency for such a dangerous venture.

An embattled Evelyn said Daniel was a nice boy who did not mingle with bad friends.

She said, “My son answers Daniel in school and Ricky at home. I went to my elder sister’s place who put to bed and when I got home the next morning (Saturday), I couldn’t find him. My daughter told me that they quarrelled in the night because he woke at midnight to watch movies and she told him to stop watching movie in the night and she said he eventually slept in the parlour while she said she went back to sleep in the room.
“One of his younger brothers said he saw him remove all his school books from his bag; so I asked my neighbours whether any of them saw him and they told me that at around 5 to 6 am, they heard sounds that somebody was opening the gate but never thought it was my son. He doesn’t go out. What I know is that he is always watching films in the house but he doesn’t have friends.

“I went to Oba Market police station, they referred me to Evbuotubu police station, when I got there they said they will declare him missing after 24 hours and that I should come back the next day.”

Speaking on the type of person her son is, Evelyn said, “He is always at home, I have never seen anybody come to look for him and he doesn’t have friends. I am begging the government to help me, because I have never been to the airport before, I have been to Lagos before so they should help me. I don’t know how he manage to get there but I just thank God that he is alive.

  1. I thank God with you that you son is alive. But hey woman, you've got a son that has a mind of his own. Thanks for standing by HIM. I think He has watched too much American movies and try to play the real actor and not as a stunt. Nigeria Airforce should pick up this boy and help train him. Maybe one day His dream will be achieved. Security personnel should please NOT ruffle or beat this boy, rather they should pray that God will give them the courage in this boy so that they can combat the terror facing our nation. This reminds me of Harrison Ford!!!!

  4. Good talk Olumighty,we should be making efforts to learn different lessons from this incident. If anyone should get arrested,it should be all those responsible for security checks during that flight. We should all be careful of how we allow our kids to watch TV & what we allow them watch. A boy that has never been to the airport according to the mother obviously knew the possibility of being stowed away by watching it probably in a movie. Having the courage to actually put it into action should be converted to positive use. The government should rehabilitate this boy,put him in the right state of mind & direct him to more useful use of hid courage....... Chris Abara

  5. I salute that Ricky's courage cos he very brave to have attempted what he did, my only anger was that he wasn't educated enough to know that Benin doesn't have an international Airport so there's no way he would have gone to America via that route. Anyways his mum has shown a high level of maturity on this case and stood by the boy notwithstanding what he did. He has shown his own talent in his own little way and i feel he should be trained by concerned institutions where such bravery might be required like what happens in developed countries. All the same, I'll advice Ricky "quit watching too many Foreign action movies, most of those thing aren't real"

  7. Useless SSS, why not crucifying the security outfit at ports.

This is an indication that no security in Nigeria.

This is an indication that many Nigerians are living, seeping, swimming and dining with abject poverty therefore, government should look in to this and work towards that but not witch hunt the parent of the innocent boy.

  14. @IME EKONG, the boy might aware that, there is no international air port in Benin, but had a plan to join another one from Lagos to US, the question is, why did he want to leave Nigeria? the answer is simple, bad leadership, if the boarder is open there wont be anyone in the country except the politicians that has access to politic fund irrespective of their political parties, because they are the same. we are watching while they are looting. I STAND TO BE CORRECTED.
