REVEALED: The List Of Senators Who Voted In Favour To Legalize Underage Marriage In Nigeria

We now know how senators voted on the constitution amendment bill which caused an uproar in the senate on Tuesday.

Former Zamfara State Governor and current Senator, Sani Yerima, whose marriage to a 13-year-old girl drew widespread outrage in 2009, literally pressed the Senate to reverse a vote that appeared to outlaw underage marriage

The part up for ammendment relates to persons qualifies to renounce Nigerian citizenship. The constitution in Section 29 says anyone of age can do so.
Section 29(4) (b) says that ” any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.” It means that even a child if married can be seen to be of full age and as such can renounce citizenship. The committee proposed that that provision be deleted.

When it was put to vote, 2/3 of members present voted for it which meant it was deleted. 2
Senator Yerima had kicked and mobilised his fellow Muslims in the Senate which was threatening to cause confusion. Despite the senate president, David Mark insisting that it could no longer be revisited as it had been voted upon, Yerima continued his objection.

Due to the sensitive nature, Mark had to call for another vote. At this point the Senators who were in favour of this clause could no longer muster 2/3 of the votes that will retain Section 29, Clause 4 (b). Senators still voted 60 votes to 35 votes for the clause to be deleted, but it did not satisfy the 2/3 requirement and so, according to the senate version, “any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.”

Thanks to Sen. Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central, ACN), we have the full list of the senators who voted NO)
The senators who voted NO, that is those who did not want the clause deleted, include the following:

1. Sen. Abdulmumin M. Hassan (Jigawa South West, PDP)
2. Sen. Abdullahi Danladi (Jigawa North West, PDP)

    3. @anonymous, NOTE: If something grossly wrong is done in hiding its because the offender knows its gravity. When someone is attempting to do something which is wrong in a right way, it still doesn't make it right. Those that defile the house of God raping kids and the practicing all sorts of inhuman activities will not go unpunished by God, but when a man comes out in the open to try and justify this kind of silly act, he and his supporters MUST be frowned at. And don't go fooling yourself thinking what Yerima is doing is right because some people are hiding in their houses and defiling little girls. Let's all identify the fact that they are BOTH wrong, and the act is severly inhuman and unjust to the little ones they are taking advantage of!!!

  5. Lack of Logical Reasoning is apparently the Sign of Knowlwdge Deficiency.

Today majority of people in the world and by inclusion, most Nigerians,my country men and women are rather too shallow in their thinking or reasoning on matters of importance.

Rapes in 'Houses of Gods', adultery now common place phenomenom, sodomy now foolishly called Gay ma" ignorantly brainwashed to accept these evils and satanic bondage as civilization and freedom.

Which is superior, safer for our well being in this life and afterworlds: 'underage marriage' or rape, 'polygamy' or adultery, 'early marriage' or sodomy, etc.

Lets go back to our creator's manual of purposeful existence. (Bible or Al-Qu'ran both are very clear about purposeful ways of living, no contradictions!

Be warned, be knowledgeable and Fear God

It only goes to sjow d type of pple we have in our senate...my God....I'm ashamed to call myself a nigerian...dis country is sick...but wat else is new wen a serving governor married a 13 yr old girl, got away with it n even won election to the senate....I dnt think he'd do anything less than legalise his perversion..n lok at d list of pple dat suported him...fellow paedophiles like him who like some1 said b4 need young girls to renew n recharge their political juju...pastors n other men of God who defile such innocents are no different justbdatbdey didnt get d permission of the child's parents..dis also highlights d level of poverty in d north...hw many families in d north can refuse d advances of a serving governor wen dey knw wat dey stand to gain...if dey refuse..d consequences cld be dire indeed...also their acceptance is simply based on survival instincts cos dey most likely cant provide a better life for d poor child...dats y d northern elite will keep d poor just d way they are....while d rich get richer....hw many of d imbeciles dat assented to dat bill will accept d advances of a fellow senator towards their own 13yr old daughters?......if dey can answer dis question honestly...then its all good....if not....then their judgment lies with their maker

  9. This is sad! These senators are hypocritical and despicable people. Every time this country takes one step forward, they insist on pulling us two steps back. In what world is a 12/13 year old an adult? They are just a bunch of paedophiles... anyway, most of them are following a man that married a 6 year old!

  10. The fact that something is legal does not make it morally or ethically right(or what do you say to the apartheid system in SA Or the Jim Crow laws in the USA?) and the fact that so called 'men of God' prey upon young boys and girls does not define who a true man of God (it only proves they were never really who we said they were or at best had gone astray). What baffles me is how the senate president can call for another vote when the majority had spoken simply because one misguided, self serving fellow continues to make noise. Is that what we understand democracy to mean?? Nigerians, I think we better watch because a dangerous trend is been set here. First it was 19 vs 16, then came 27 vs 5, and now this: 65 vs 35! I hope some forces are not trying to get Nigerians used to the idea that in the new 'democrazy' the minority carries the vote???

  17. Shame on the senate and the perverted Senator Ahmed Yerima. I am disgusted and appalled by the new constitutional amendments and how it affects the rights of children. Especially the girl child. If passed into law, It will basically make it legal for any sick bastard to have carnal knowledge of a girl child under the pretext of marriage. The senators have voted for the amendment. They plan to pass it into law. I am outraged. I am livid. Not my child. Not my sister. Not my niece. Not the daughter of that poor relative of mine in maiduguri. Nigerian women & indeed d men must make a statement. We must protect our children. Let these senators allow their 13yr olds marry to prove they believe its right. They are rich and powerful, their child isn't in immediate risk. What of the millions of girl children? Don't stand by and watch as our rights & the rights of an already vulnerable and violated Nigerian girl child get trampled upon. Please, I beg you. Show up and make a change. It'll take 10 minutes of your life. Stop the senate from passing this into a bill. Senator Ahmed Yerima wasn't even allowed to marry his underage bride in Egypt but because we are lawless and useless, he flew in the child and married her here in Abuja. Back then, he broke the law but he is a big time ex gov senator so he wasn't charged to court. With this new move, as a 60 year old, he can have a harem of 12yr olds and no one can legally take action against him. Not on our watch. Pls step up!!!

  19. I used to think that Nigeria is a wonderful country full of upright people who will protect the weak, elderly, women and especially children. Not any more with all the wickedness going on. And now the country is full of Paedophiles. You read about church pastors raping 10 year old children and now our senate is full of them.

In a civilised country, a man having sex with a 13 year old will be imprison and will be registered as a Yerima by the Police. Not in Nigeria, they are in Parliament and exhibiting the fact of their sickness by sponsoring bills to enshrine sex with children in the constitution!

Mr. Yerima used his wealth to convince the 13 year old girl's parents to make her his 'wife'. Why couldn't Mr Yerima marry a woman instead of a child? As a Paedophile Mr Yerima, if he lives in Britain or any European country would be in Jail and decent people would avoid him at all cost and most parents would not want him to live on their street. Not in Nigeria. He is a big no in Parliament and used to be a Governor of a State. No wonder the whole country is in a mess.

I live in Accra and would not care to go back to live in Nigeria even if i am paid 20 million dollars. Good day.

  21. The Senator's appetite for the underage goes to buttress the believe that seventy virgins jokes is really true. @ Lamaran your Koran taught other better things one should do to show love and faith in your religion and not only marrying underage girls in the name of religion.
Please someone should tell these senators that they should not use tax payers money to engage in frivolities like this all in a bid to make laws.

  22. This issue is to be responded to meticulously. Two wrongs don't make a right. A pastor who rapes or abuses a minor in any way & some one who legally marries a minor are same. The fact that the parent & child consented to it doesn't make it right. We must not forget that we're bound by certain standard moral & statutory requirements, standard social regulations to belong & be accepted in the global family. If the consent of the parents & that of the child is all that matters, then parents can as well agree with their children to get married to them. Keep them back in the house to satisfy their sexual desires,& other issues. We talk about the right of a child today,it is most times with the consent of the child that the child is deprived of several rights & privileges like education & others. If it becomes legal as they want to get married to minors, when will these little mothers acquire the education & other expiriences they need to impact on their children? What will our future Nigeria be like? A country full of inexperienced mothers that will bear forth children that will be so misguided that our country will be full of children without proper & adequate parental guidance or a country that will lack so much of human resources bcos children will not be allowed to to to school bcos they want to get married? A child who gets married at 13yrs will certainly have insufficient education, maybe that's why education is a crime to certain people "Boko Haram". From the list of voters for or against this law,is it difficult to see that the views of the north & the south in several issues of National interest are so dispersed? Yet you guys don't want to divide this country.
