Federal Government Postpones Repairs on Third Mainland Bridge Indefinitely

The Federal Government has indefinitely suspended the proposed repair work earlier scheduled to begin on the Third Mainland Bridge Sunday.

The Lagos Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Charles Akpabio, said the postponement of the repairs is intended to put more measures in place to ease possible traffic congestion the closure of bridge will create.

Mr Akpabio urged all motorists in Lagos to go about their activities and wait for further information on the bridge repair.

The FRSC had explained that traffic information would be communicated from time to time via Radio, Television, Newspapers and social media network.

The commission said that as the lead agency in traffic management in Nigeria, it had concluded plans to coordinate the various traffic agencies involved in the exercise.

He noted that Section 15 of the FRSC Act 2007 clearly stipulated that the operation of the Corps should cover all public roads, adding that the Corps statutory responsibility is to control and enforce traffic regulations on public roads “as we did during the 2008 maintenance work on the Third Mainland Bridge.”

The Third Mainland Bridge was to have been closed for about five months beginning Sunday and to be re-opened on November 6, 2012.

  6. yeah dry season is better cos we experience a lot of traffic during raining season, so if third mainland is close now the traffic will be worst.

    1. You ask why they planned to repair it now in d first place? Maybe because the bridge actually needs urgent repairs!!!
They had better start working on that bridge section by section, lane by lane if that's the case. We rather traffic to 'london bridge is falling down'

  10. Third Mainland Bridge is the only fastest way to commute to the VI and Lekki. Now look at this....the other alternative routes are already congested with heavy traffic....When the traffic from third mainland will divert to those places imagine the chaos and the traffic....When there is no alternative route as good as third mainland....why even think of closing the bridge...this is like removal of subsidy....without providing constant power....Pls they must work on providing an alternate fast route to the suburbs before even thinking of any maintenance...Even if they want to maintain it...they must do it from 10 pm in the night to 5 am in the morning.

  11. Hmmmmm!
My people, better just hope that this decision they made is in wisdom. Like a commentator earlier said, I will better stay in traffic than being caught on a falling bridge. May God continue to protect us.
