Blackberry Lovers found dead inside parked tinted Car

Incidences of lovers being found dead inside vehicles around Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital have been generating reactions from the public. While some residents blame the incidents on poor security vigilance in the hospital, others point fingers at what they see as an emerging social problem associated with the proliferation of social networking, especially on mobile phones.

Recently, the lifeless bodies of a man and woman - Najib Aliyu Yunusa and Nadiya Abdullahi Gwammaja - were discovered decomposing at a quiet area inside Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital by passersby who were attracted by an odious smell that was oozing from a heavily tinted saloon car.

A source from the lady’s family, who claimed to be her younger brother, said Nadiya was a divorcee and had a 6-year-old daughter from her last marriage, while Najib, a manager of a filling station in Abuja, was her ‘BlackBerry Fiend’ who was also married and had two children. “We discovered that she obtained the contact of the deceased man from one of her closest female friends in our area,” he said.

A hospital official said after patients complained about some strange smell, workers traced the source of the odour to the car in which the decomposing bodies were found at about 7pm last Monday. “The deceased were suspected to have died since Friday when they came there and parked; only God knows what happened”, Aminu Inuwa Ringim, the hospital’s spokesman told reporters.

People, who were in the area when the corpses were evacuated, said there was no sign of physical injuries or violence on them. “The only unusual thing was that blood was seen trickling down the noses of both corpses which were swollen up… They might have probably been poisoned elsewhere before they came into the hospital”, a patient’s relative, Musa Garba noted

A medical source, who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity, lamented that the hospital has been allowed to be used by some people as a relaxation and not a health centre.

A concerned parent, Maryam Fagge, opined that there is a need for parents and guardians to re-examine the use of latest mobile phones like blackberry and other gadgets which come with social networking facilities in them among young people in the society, notably women.

“This alarming trend should be a source of concern for all parents because it is turning our children into something else. You may not believe it if I tell you that our teenage daughters now abandon the house chores and instead spend more than 15 hours chatting with strangers on blackberry messaging or Facebook. That’s how they become used by strange men who later lure them into following them to relaxation or entertainment centers without their parents knowledge or consent”, she lamented.

She therefore advised parents to exercise control over their children by monitoring their use of mobile phones and the internet strictly.

    1. There Is Something I still Don't Understand! Is It Blackberry That Killed Them?

    2. They should trace what killed them and not blame it on blackberry. Blackberry is not the issue here, they might have been dumped there who knows!

  2. They might have kept the car engine running and died form carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas which if inhaled in excess of 12,800 ppm can lead in just 3 minutes. The first thing they need to check is if there is nay fuel left in the car.

  4. this case has nothing to do with blackberry or any social media. The real issue here is promiscuity and waywardness. Before the advent of BB and social media, people were still engaged in all this illicit affairs and they devised their meanings of hooking up. we should address the real issue here and not chasing shadows.

  5. NigerianEye, this item makes me question the quality of your reporting:

    1. what exactly do your coinages "BlackBerry Lovers" and "BlackBerry Friend" mean? How does finding 2 dead bodies in a car suddenly spark a discussion about BB or social networking?

    2. You open your piece with "Incidences of lovers being found dead inside vehicles...", which implies a trend, but you report only one incident.

It appears to me that your reporters, on seeing this incident and deciding on their own that it had to do with BB and social networking, interviewed people (if at all they did) with that slant, thus eliciting these responses. And they further decided to escalate this single incident into a trend of "incidences"

Please guys, I have never really seen you as a tabloid, but I am beginning to wonder...

  6. @ bassey daniel, chill out. Investigations showed that they communicated via the blackberry social network. they had their pins.

Investigations also showed that Lovers had been frequenting that spot before, you should read the post patiently before you start bashing the site

  7. amiuafigo, you are right, i have seen such incidence where lovers died in their sleep becos they inhaled carbon monoxide from their "i pass my neighbour" gen which they put inside their house becos it was raining outside. i suggest their should be a public lecture or awareness programme to enlighten people on CARBON MONOXIDE

  8. If you train your daughters well and give them a little bit of your time instead of gossiping about other people. And talking crap allover the place, they would not be lured by strange men to relaxation or entertainment spots without your knowledge or consent. Even before BB and other social media platforms came to be, girls have been F'ing around. Come on accept responsibility and stop blaming the BB for your mistakes. I am a mother and I will say it as it is.

  9. Most likely CO (Carbon Monoxide) poisoning. Carbon Monoxide comes out of car exhausts and for many older cars (including a taxi I entered some months back) the exhaust fumes can come into the occupants compartment. If your car is more than eight years old, please check it out. Particularly if you have aircon or you don't like to open your window.

If CO levels are high they can cause unconsciousness within a few minutes and death within 10 minutes.

I suspect that many Nigerians suffer from CO poisoning (at a mild level because they drive with their window open) without knowing it.

  11. still trying to understand how the family members blamed the deaths on the use of blackberry. without d use of bb, dat man would still be unfaithful to his wife. the lady made little sense when she said that girls abandon their chores to chat. but every other thing in this article is plain rubbish!!!!!
