THE Confederation of African Football on Wednesday released a list of 10 names for the African Football of the Year with Nigerian players missing from the list.
It is the second year in a row that Nigerians will fail to make the nomination list.
A Nigerian was last nominated in 2009 when Chelsea’s Mikel Obi made the first list. The football body, however, nominated Enyimba midfielder Kalu Uche in the category of players based in Africa.
CAF said the nominations were based on the performance and contribution of the players to their clubs and national teams during the year.
On the list are three Ghanaians, Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew and Kevin Prince Boateng, while England-based Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Gervinho represent Cote d’Ivoire.
Also on the list are Moroccan Adel Tarrabt, Moussa Sow of Senegal, Mali’s Seydou Keita and four-time winner Samuel Eto’o, who is still favourite for the award.
Uche was nominated based on his performance during the CAF Champions League where he scored four goals before Enyimba crashed out in the semi-finals.
He will, however, face stiff competition from Tunisia’s Zouheir Dhaouadi, who was the top scorer and best player at the CHAN tournament in February and has helped his team Club Africain reached the CAF Confederation Cup final.
Others on the list are Ayoub Elkhiqi (Morocco and WAC), Yaya Banana (Cameroon and Esperance), Edward Sadomba (Zimbabwe and Al Hilal), Idrissa Laouali (Niger and ASFA), Jerome Ramatlhakwane (Botswana and Vasco da Gama), Oussama Darragi (Tunisia and Esperance), Samir Aboud (Libya and Al-Etihad) and Youssef Msakni (Tunisia and Esperance).
