Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji
By Linda Eroke
Organised labour has declared its intention to confront the management of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), over proposed retrenchment of workers in the industry.
The workers, under the umbrella of Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), had also written the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, to withdraw directives to chief executives in the industry to sack a large percentage of the workforce.
The workers stressed that the association will not hesitate to fight any institution to deprive members of their fundamental rights.
The association, in letter to the Minister also directed that the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) resolution that expressly states that “all labour issues must precede bidding and sale of any public company” should be complied with and all outstanding agreements with the workers implemented before any form of rationisation in the organisation.
Part of the letter signed by the national President, Comrade Bede Opara, and Secretary General, Comrade Abiodun Ogunsegha, reads: “We wish to bring to your knowledge the fact that before your appointment as Minister, the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, had appointed a Negotiator/Conciliator to look into and resolve the labour issues in the power sector, before the planned reforms.
“We draw your attention to the outcomes of 1st and 2nd meetings chaired by the same Negotiator/Conciliator at Abuja and Ghana, wherein it was explicitly stated that no action prejudicial to the final outcome of the negotiations should be undertaken by any side.
“Consequently your earlier memo to PHCN management and BPE to the effect that promotions are suspended was withdrawn to pave way for the negotiations.
“We specifically draw your attention to the outcome of Ghana round of talks, the summary of which is that Government did not show commitment to the process by implementing the outcome of the Abuja round of meetings,” the letter read.
