Floods likely in Lagos, Bauchi – DG NIMET

The Director-General, Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, has warned that Lagos and Bauchi states may experience fresh floods this month.

Anufurom, who gave a hint at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, also said that thunderstorm would reach its peak in the Federal Capital Territory in the month of September and within the Ikeja area of Lagos in October.

The NIMET boss regretted that despite the alarm it raised in February that the impending rainfall could lead to flooding, disaster and deaths in coastal cities, relevant authorities did not do anything to avert the dangers.

He said the agency was about to dispatch letters to governors of the states that could be affected by flooding in the month of September so that adequate precaution could be taken to avert possible loss of lives and properties.

According to him, flooding in Lagos, Bauchi and Calabar may not necessarily be triggered by heavy rainfalls because the ground was already wet from previous rains.

He said, “Our responsibility is to give information. It is the responsibility of others to use the information. The emergency management agency, for instance, is the number one in our mailing list.

“We are getting signals that we should be careful with Bauchi. It does not have to be Bauchi town. It could be the surroundings. Let us keep an eye on Bauchi.”

He also said, “We are writing letters to state governors – to Bauchi State Government in particular. There are state governments that have been proactive using our information. Osun State is one of them. Some take our warning seriously; others don’t.

“Sometimes when there are thunderstorms, I get calls from highly-placed people asking why we allowed an aircraft to fly. It is not our duty to stop a pilot from flying when there is thunderstorm. It is our responsibility to inform the pilot that there will be thunderstorm.”

On Lagos, Anuforom said the vulnerability of the city to flooding in the month of September had not abated because of the saturation of the soil.

Heavy rain measuring 234.54mm had descended on Lagos on July 10, triggering a flood that led to loss of lives and properties.

The rainfall was higher than the city’s monthly average of 208.4mm (1971 – 2000 monthly average).
