The 2,000 workers recently laid off by the Ogun State government yesterday took their plight to the Nigeria Labour Congress {NLC} secretariat in Abeokuta, with the hope that the union leaders would take up the matter.
The workers, who were employed at the tail end of the administration of the immediate past governor, Gbenga Daniel, were recently sacked by the new administration, which argued that they got appointments without following due process.
The state government, while explaining its decision on the workers, explained that they were simply asked to leave and re-apply for the job. It stated that those who meet the employment criteria would be re-engaged on merit.
Most of the protesters yesterday stormed the labour secretariat with their curriculum vitae and other relevant credentials to prove that they had the requisite qualification.
They were said to have been contacted through their coordinators that they should appear at the labour secretariat with their credentials for screening, as part of the process towards their being re-engaged.
The credentials and other documents were to be handed over to the state chairman of the NLC, Akeem Ambali, who is expected to hold a meeting with the governor before the week runs out.
At 3pm on Monday, the crowd was still at the secretariat, located opposite the deputy governor’s lodge, processing their documents.
