Police arrest two siblings for alleged murder

Two siblings, Florence Ndikwu, 25, and Chukwudebum, 23, are in the police custody for allegedly killing their landlady. The incident reportedly happened on July 16 at 4, Fabulous Street, in Ikorodu, following a quarrel over insults and name calling.

The landlady, Oladuni Bisiriyu, 46, was said to have engaged the Ndikwus in a quarrel which later led to her untimely death. Eyewitnesses said after the quarrel, Mrs Bisiriyu, a mother of three, became ill and was later taken to the hospital two days later where she was confirmed dead.

Following her demise, members of her family stormed the apartment of the Ndikwus and started beating them up. It took the intervention of the police from the Ikorodu police station to save them from being lynched. Miss Ndikwu however said they did not kill their landlady. She stated that Mrs Bisiriyu was all out to kill them that fateful day but she ended up killing herself in the process.

"We are the two children of our mother and our father is dead. That Saturday, in the morning I was going to my shop where I plait hair for people then I heard my landlady's son calling me a prostitute, I went to him to confront him but his mother who was sitting with him when he called me names did not scold him," she explained.

"Rather she supported him and kept calling me and my family [unprintable] names, I was angry and told her to take her trouble elsewhere; she jumped at me and held on to my dress saying that I must kill her today or else she will not leave me." According to her, neighbours tried all they could to stop the quarrel to no avail.

"The landlady was poised for a fight that day and when my younger brother came out to separate us and other neighbours, she left me and held my brothers pant saying that the two of us must kill her in this house; it was her husband who later came to remove her grip from our clothes. God knows that we did not touch her all the while she as fighting us," Miss Ndikwu said.

Mrs Bisriyu's corpse has since been deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary for autopsy. However, her family members want the suspects charged to court for alleged murder.
"These children used something like a charm on our sister and that was what killed her. They may be lying saying that they do not know anything but we know that they have a hand in her death, therefore the police should charge them to court because after they fought with her that day she fell ill and two days later she died in the hospital from complications as a result of the fight," the brother of the deceased said.

Police spokesperson Samuel Jinadu, while disclosing that the case is under investigation, advised people to "shun violence and live in peace with one another."

"Parents and guardians are advised to monitor their children and wards and inculcate in them moral values that will keep them away from trouble; the corpse has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy and officers from the homicide department at Panti Yaba are investigating the case," Mr Jinadu said.
