The National Universities Commission (NUC), has accredited 11 courses for degree programmes at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The NUC team, led by Samuel Njoku, a professor, arrived the institution on Monday and approved 11 out of the 20 courses that were presented for accreditation . The remaining nine courses got interim accreditation.
According to Mr Njoku, "The NUC team is here to see what is on the ground and to write report. The team is not on a fault-finding mission. We are all in the same boat to improve university education to make the future brighter for the country." The Sole Administrator of the institution,
Francisca Aladejana, who received the delegation, expressed confidence that the institution would have all its courses accredited because of the cognate measures that had already been taken for swift take off of degree programmes in the college.
Mrs Aladejana explained that the degree programme of the college in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka started since 1992 as a sandwich programme.
She said that the regular degree programme with the same university was introduced in 2004 after a thorough assessment of quality of human and material resources of the college by the NUC.
According to her, the college had produced three sets of graduates of the degree programme and have gone for their National Youths Service Corps programme.
"I am happy to inform this gathering that none of our courses was denied accreditation during the 2009 accreditation exercise." She added that the college has improved in all areas where it was rated low in the previous exercises.
The college, she said, has embarked on aggressive staff development programmes through sponsorship of its academic staff for post-graduate courses, especially doctorate programmes.
