Ajimobi slashes fees in tertiary schools

GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State yesterday reviewed fees being paid in state-owned tertiary institutions, ordering a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees.

His predecessor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, had increased the fees during his tenure, an action, which was roundly condemned by students and parents.

In line with Ajimobi’s pledge during his electioneering campaign to slash the fees if elected, students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan had marched to the governor’s office on his first day at work, demanding that he fulfills the promise.

Ajimobi, who gave the directive after a meeting with heads of tertiary institutions in the state, however, stated that the exercise would take place as from next session.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Communication, Dr. Festus Adedayo, the governor explained that the reduction was borne out of his concern for the welfare of students in the institutions and in fulfillment of his electoral promise to the people.

Governor Ajimobi also promised to undertake further actions in the near future to improve the welfare of students in the state, stating that as leaders of tomorrow, the government has a responsibility to ensure that they enjoy conducive environment for learning.

He, however, disclosed that the reduction in the fees paid by the students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) would take effect after consultation with the Osun State government.
