IBADAN — THE face-off between governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and his immediate predecessor, Adebayo Aloa-Akal, yesterday deepened as Akala pointedly told Ajimobi that he got N6.5 billion allocation for June and Security vote of N100 million while the governor denied the allegation.
Also, Ajimobi faulted Akala for paying himself and his aides 300% of their salaries as severance packages, Akala defended the payment as statutory as stipulated by the Revenue, Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC.
The duo also tackled each other over the N18.000 new minimum wage.
Ajimobi, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Dr. Festus Adedayo, said his government was workers friendly and asked those who never had the interest of workers at heart to refrain from pretending and acting like “chameleon, emergency sympathizers” of a course they resented while in office.
He asked, “why Akala, in spite of regular collection of excess crude oil and N20billion in debt relief funds, failed to meet workers’ expectations all through his wasted years in government, leading to frequent strikes in the state, the last being the 7-month strike by medical workers that persisted till his historic defeat at the polls.”
The governor denied that the state collected N6.5billion in Federal allocation in June as claimed by spokesman of Alao-Akala.
The statement denied that neither the governor nor any of his aides collected a kobo in allowances since they resumed, talk less of “heavy allowances” challenging Alao-Akala to publish the amount, the recipients of such amounts for the whole world to see “or else, henceforth, stop feeding the public barefaced lie.”
On his part, the former governor through his spokesperson, Prince Dotun Oyelade, justified the payment of his aides their severance allowance before leaving office.
According to him, “all that was statutorily paid was what was stipulated by the Revenue, Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and traditionally, all sitting government pays itself in the wake of its exit.”
On the 50 percent reduction of fees for students in tertiary institutions in the state , the ex-governor said he was not averse to it “in as much as he can sustain the tempo of such a promise.”
Akala said, ‘In our bid to run a decent and civilized opposition, we will praise when necessary and criticize government when it is deserved.
Equally, if the Governor denies that his administration got N6.5 billion from Abuja in the month of June, let him tell us how much came to the coffers of Oyo State in the same month, IGR and all.”
On the allowances to current political office holders which the present government denied, the statement said it stood by its story and submitted that Ajimobi cannot deny that he has collected fully, his security vote for the month of June, amounting to almost N100 million, said the former governor.
