The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Uyo, Prof. Des Wilson, has alleged a threat to his life as a result of his complaint about electoral malpractices during the April 9, 2011 National Assembly election in Akwa Ibom North.
Wilson, who was the returning officer at Ikot Ekpene during the election, said his official memo on the subject to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, was published in a newspaper (not THE PUNCH) without his knowledge.
He said after the letter was published, highly placed individuals within the state began threatening to eliminate him.
In a letter addressed to the Director, State Security Service, Akwa-Ibom State, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, on Sunday, Wilson asked for protection.
The letter titled, ‘Request for Protection of my life,’ read in part, “On the 7th of July, The Nation newspaper published a letter which I had sent to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, complaining about electoral malpractices during the National Assembly election April 9, 2011.
“The letter was written on the 10th of April, 2011 being the day we concluded the sham election in Akwa Ibom North Senatorial District (Ikot Ekpene) where I was Returning Officer.”
He alleged that after the publication of the letter, the state governor summoned the Vice-Chancellor of the University who in turn threatened to “deal with me.”
Wilson further said “Right from the moment, I received calls from unknown sources many of which I refused to answer. My children have also been threatened.”
The don said his life had not been the same since the incident, adding that uniformed persons he suspected to be hired assassins, had been surveilling his house.
