Argentina coach, Sergio Batista who led his country to their first defeat to Nigeria at the senior level was full of praise for the Super Eagles, describing the Samson Siasia tutored side as “a very good team.”
Batista was so impressed after the match that he dismissed the insinuation that the Eagles shone because of the absence of some big names in the Argentine squad. Batista responded, “I don’t think even if Messi had played this game would have been different.
The Nigerian players were on top of their game. They were more determined and took their chances. So, Messi or no Messi, Nigeria could still have won the match because they played better. I have no regret.”
However, the Argentina sweat merchant believes there were a lot of positives he took from the match. “The match was an eye opener. It is part of our preparations for the COPA America which we are hosting. We are building a team which will give Argentina a good representation. As hosts, nobody expects less from us. When we get back, we will know from where to start and where we are going.”
He said he liked the quality of opposition the Super Eagles provided as his young players were not given any chance to play their game.
“It shows that we are not there yet.
It calls for hardwork and more commitment. It demands that we all be serious and committed to the task ahead. COPA America is not a small competition. It demands the best of any country that qualifies to be there. That is our target.,” Batista said.
