The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has adopted Senator David Mark and Mrs. Mulikat Akande-Adeola as the party’s candidates for the positions of the President of the Senate and Speaker, House of Representatives, respectively.
The Acting Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Bello Haliru, said this while speaking with journalists after attending a meeting convened by the PDP Governors at the Rivers State Governors Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja. The meeting ended at about 10.17pm.
The party chairman also said the meeting resolved that the two positions should not be contested by any lawmaker elected on its plartform.
Haliru explained that he led a delegation of the PDP, which comprised Vice President Namadi Sambo and the National Secretary, Alh. Abubakar Baraje, to intimate the governors with the party’s position on the issue of zoning.
He added that the PDP decided to endorse Mark and Akande-Adeola because the positions of the President of Senate and the Speaker of the House Representatives had been zoned to the North-Central and the South-West respectively.
He noted that the party’s decision to endorse the female lawmaker, who is representing Ogbomoso North/Ogbomoso South/Orire Federal Constituency of Oyo State, for the number four leadership position in the country was informed by its belief in 35 per cent affirmative action on women representation.
He explained that it was the position of the PDP that whenever a female and a male were locked in a contest for a political office, the woman is backed in line with the party’s belief in affirmative action.
The PDP acting national chairman also said the party instructed the governors to go to their various geopolitical zones to prevail on their elected representatives to support the party’s position.
He added that the governors supported a motion to back the party’s position on zoning and the adoption of Mark and Akande-Adeola for the positions.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, refused to comment on the outcome of the meeting when our correspondent approached him for comments.
He said he would not comment on the outcome of the meeting as the party’s acting national chairman had already spoken on the issue.
He said “There are no highlights and no summary of what took place inside there. The chairman of the party has already spoken; so there is no summary.”
