The Southsouth caucus of the House of Representatives yesterday threw its weight behind Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola’s speakership bid.
Chairman of the caucus Andrew Uchendu said in Abuja yesterday that the adoption of Akande-Adeola as the preferred candidate was in line with its decision to support the zoning arrangement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PDP zoned the position to the Southwest. Deputy Speaker is zoned to the Northeast.
The party zoned the position of House leader to the Northwest, Deputy House leader to Southsouth and the Southeast retains chief whip.
Uchendu said: “A Few days ago, the Southsouth caucus of the House of Representatives took a decision to support whatever zoning arrangement of our party, PDP. We took that position convinced that none of us in the PDP or any other party should run as an independent candidate to flout the position of the party.
“Shortly after taking the decision, two ranking members from the Southwest indicated their interest in the office. We have taken time to evaluate their character, their conduct and based on that, we met last night to adopt Akande-Adeola for the position of speaker.”
It was also learnt that Mrs Akande-Adeola at about 7pm began the last lap of her campaign by meeting with all zones in their various camps in Abuja.
Investigation showed that some PDP governors had stormed Abuja to give backing to President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-President Namadi Sambo and PDP leaders in their quest for the choice of Mrs Akande-Adeola.
