NNPC, marketers meet, vow to end kerosene scarcity
THE unstable supply of electricity in the country may worsen as Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) have begun the maintenance of a burst pipeline supplying gas from the Utorogu plant to Egbin, Geregu and Olorunsogo power stations.
Power generation has for a while hovered between 2,000 and 3,500 megawatts, but has for some time stabilised at 3,800mw due to repairs on some damaged gas plants and rehabilitation of some existing power plants.
With the latest development, which is expected to reduce power generation, there are fears that Nigeria may witness outage, as gas supply would be hampered.
In the meantime, the scarcity of kerosene in the country is expected to end in the next 10 days as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and members of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) are working together to attain the goal.
Speaking at a joint press conference after a meeting by the corporation and the marketers, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Austen Oniwon, announced that concrete measures have been put in place to end the kerosene issue within the next 10 days.
The management of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) said yesterday in a statement that the reduction in power generation from its power plants was due to the inability of NGC to supply gas to Egbin, Geregu and Olorunsogo power stations.
According to the PHCN, SPDC and NGC have attributed the gross shortfall in gas supply to the maintenance of a leak in the pipeline evacuating condensate and crude from Utorogu gas plant.
The PHCN regretted the inconveniences being experienced by its esteemed customers due to reduction in generation from its power plants, which has given rise to the ongoing load-shedding nationwide.
This reduction, according to PHCN, has come at a time when the nation’s dams are at their lowest level, and the company’s ability to replace the lost thermal generation with hydro-generation is severely limited.
It said: “While we are sensitive to the plight of our customers, we appeal for understanding and assure that power supply will improve as the NGC has promised to hasten the repair process with a view to restoring normal gas supply to the affected stations.”
In the same vein, the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company of PHCN has attributed the outage being experienced by its customers in Lagos Island, Ikoyi and its environs to technical faults.
The company’s Principal Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Godwin Idemudia, said in a statement that the outage arose due to major faults on a 15MVA transformer at Keffi 33/11KV Injection sub-station.
Idemudia explained that as a result of the faults, electricity customers in Awolowo Road, Keffi and parts of Obalende might experience a prolonged outage.
But he assured customers being affected by the faults that the company’s technicians and engineers were working assiduously to restore normal power supply within the shortest possible time.
Idemudia however expressed PHCN’s regrets over the inconveniences the outage might cause its valued customers in the affected areas.
Oniwon stated that all the principal stakeholders have undertaken to ensure that kerosene was available in major marketers-controlled filing stations (Oando, Mobil, Conoil, Total, AP, MRS) nationwide within the next 10 days as well as in all NNPC retail stations.
He said: “The summary of what we are here to do today is to reassure Nigerians that the principal stakeholders have given an undertaking that within the next 10 days, household kerosene will be available in all major marketers’ retail outlets in addition to all NNPC mega stations nationwide.”
The NNPC helmsman, who assured that the corporation has enough stock of kerosene to last for 40 days outside of what is produced by the refineries, also disclosed that plans were on to reach out to other stakeholders in the downstream sector to ensure that normalcy is
permanently restored to the kerosene supply and distribution network in the country.
Explaining why the NNPC affiliate stations are not included in the new distribution arrangement, the GMD said most of them have been found not to comply with the standard required by the corporation and that very soon, the sub-standard ones would be weeded out and stopped from wearing NNPC colours and logos.
Oniwon stated that in the days ahead, the NNPC would hold similar meeting with members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) to firm up similar commitment.
The Executive Secretary of MOMAN, Mr. Femi Olawore, pledged the commitment of members of the association to work towards the achievement of the 10 days target.
“We have been given the assurance that we will get the product in large quantity. We give ourselves 10 days, with the product coming in, we would like to assure you that we will start immediately and we shall all see the effect of pumping the product into our retail network and to the consumers. We want to say that we have done it before and we are ready to do it again,” Olawore stated.
