Govt to tackle bomb blasts, others via satellite
AGAINST the backdrop of the recent bomb blasts in the country, the Federal Government yesterday disclosed that it was working towards curtailing the menace with the provision of satellite imagery even as it planned the launch of SAT 2 before the end of July, 2011.
The Director, Centre for Satellite Technology Development (CSTD), Dr. Spencer Onu, made the disclosure in Abuja at its first conference tagged “Reaping the benefits of space via small satellites.
Speaking on the security threat in the country, Onu explained that the centre had been approached to work with relevant agencies to develop necessary techniques to face the challenge.
He stressed that the security issue in the country could be addressed via the imagery system, adding that the centre was working with relevant security agencies to come out with designs that would help to curb kidnapping, robbery and bomb blast.
He said: “We know that with the use of radioactive material, they could be detected from space. That is why we are working on that at the moment to collaborate with relevant agencies, we can’t talk much on it for now but we are addressing the issue.”
According to him, the Nigeria Sat2 will soon be launched, noting: “On the launch of Sat 2, we were given a window to be June 16 to 26 but there is another window most probably before the end of July.”
Onu explained that the conference became imperative because it appeared not much was being heard about this aspect of government programme, adding that it was targeted to share ideas and collaborate with other agencies and understand areas of support, strength and capacity building. However, budgetary constraint has remained a challenge.
