Musuveni, Mugabe, Zuma attend Jonathan's inauguration

Twenty-six heads of state and governments, including Presidents Jacob Zuma (South Africa), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), and Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe), witnessed the inauguration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as President at the Eagle Square, Abuja.


Also in attendance were the vice-presidents of Burundi, The Gambia, Kenya , Tanzania , Zambia, Swaziland, Georgia, Ethiopia and Zambia as well as ex-Ghananian President Jerry Rawling and former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda.

Five Nigerian former leaders — Shehu Shagari, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Shonekan, Yakubu Gowon and Abubakar Salami— also graced the well attended ceremony.

But two ex-Nigerian military rulers — General Ibrahim Babangida and Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari — were absent. Buhari was Jonathan’s main opponent in the April presidential election.

The other foreigh leaders were Prof. Attah Mills (Ghana), Joseph Kabila (Democratic Republic of Congo), Ellen Johnson-Sileaf (Liberia), Abdoulaye Wade(Senegal), Faure Gnassingbe(Togo), Ahmadu Toure (Mali), Alassane Ouatarra (Cote d’ Ivoire), Paul Kegame (Rwanda), George Maxwell -Richard (Trinidad & Tobago), and Blaise Compaore (Burkina Faso).

Others were Barnabas Dlamini (Swaziland), Francois Bozize (Central African Republic), Idriss Deby (Chad), Seso Nweso (Congo Brazzaville), Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo(Equatorial Guinea), Ali Bongo Ondimba (Gabon), Alpha Conde (Guinea Bissau), Mahamadou Issoufou(Niger), Lukas Bahamba (Namibia), Frandique de Menezes-(Sao Tome & Principe), Mohammed Abdelaziz-Saharawi (Arab Democratic Republic) and Ernest Koroma (Sierra Leon).
