Media aide to Ex Governor of Ogun State, Mr Gbenro Adebanjo has said reports that his boss fled the country were “wicked insinuations and another of the many lies being bandied about by his political enemies”.
“On Friday May 27, 2011, the last working day of (Gbenga) Daniel as the governor of Ogun State, he presented his handover notes to the incoming administration and also rendered his account of service,” Mr Adebanjo said. “He had earlier presented a compendium of the comprehensive account of all receipts and expenditure between 2003 to 2011 for public scrutiny. After the short ceremony, he was escorted out of the governor’s office by cheering public servants.”
The aide explained that at about 11pm, his boss left for London on a British Airways flight for a scheduled short vacation in England. He said Mr Daniel travelled through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport escorted by State Security Service (SSS) personnel and police security details and went through all the normal security checks and at no point was any query raised by security agents on duty.
“This is a well-deserved holiday for a man who worked for eight years without any holiday or break,” Mr Adebanjo said. “It is important to note that the former governor had informed all the security chiefs in Ogun State, three weeks earlier, about his intention to leave the country for a short rest on May 27. He did not go through any illegal route. This cannot be the disposition of a man fleeing the country.”
Asked why the ex- governor did not attend Sunday’s inauguration of the new administration, Mr Daniel cited an precedent. He noted that in 2003 his predecessor (Segun Osoba) did not attend his swearing-in ceremony either. Meanwhile, the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ogun governorship election, Tunde Oladunjoye, has described Mr Daniel’s travel as “expected”.
Mr Daniel travelled out of the country at the weekend, after handing over last Friday to the deputy governor-elect, fuelling rumours that it was a bid to escape prosecution. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
