Some elders from Ogun West Senatorial District yesterday accused former president, Olusegun Obasanjo of scuttling their ambition of producing the governor of Ogun State during the last gubernatorial election.
The aggrieved leaders made this known during a visit to the Sagamu private residence of the out-going governor, Gbenga Daniel and specifically accused Mr Obasanjo of using a Yewa son in the person of Adetunji Olurin to play, "the spoilers show". This, they said, denied the Yewa/Awori people the opportunity which had eluded them since the state was created over 35 years ago.
The Ogun West leaders include: The Asiwaju of Aworiland, Ayo Otegbola, Alamu Alagbe, Dele Ogunsiji, Sina Adeboye, Iyabo Anisulowo and Iyabo Apampa among others. They castigated Mr Obasanjo for what they described as "his grand deceit which truncated our Yewa Agenda dream being nurtured and solidly supported by Gbenga Daniel."
"We appreciate our dear governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel for standing by us. For the first time in the history of the state since creation over 35 years ago, you made a pronouncement concerning our aspirations which has caused you a lot of pain and betrayal and despite this, you stood by us," Mr Otegbola said.
Obasanjo the saboteur
Recalling how the issue of consensus candidate was resolved, Mr Otegbola said a committee was set up which screened all the aspirants for the gubernatorial seat which led to the emergence of Gboyega Isiaka. He however, lamented that "Obasanjo used Adetunji Olurin to destabilise us for his own ulterior motive and despite all efforts, Olurin refused to step down for our consensus candidate."
Ms Apampa while commenting on the matter said: "Our enemy is the same man who destroyed the PDP in the entire South West. They did not form any party, they joined the party to realise their ambition and after reaching the peak they destroyed the same party and here we have a six weeks old party doing exploits in an election." Responding, Mr Daniel thanked the leaders for standing on the path of principle and truth urging them to be resilient and firm rather than seeing the development as a failed project.
"You must keep up with the struggle and never give up and sooner than later, your dreams shall come true," he said.
He however, affirmed that the last elections were not rigged, but free and fair, adding that "while you are keeping hopes alive, you must continue to cooperate with the state as well as the federal government."
