Fashola dedicates victory to slain youth corps members

After he was declared the winner of the gubernatorial election in Lagos, Babatunde Fashola on Wednesday gave special thanks to "the young men and women of the National Youth Service Corps" in his acceptance speech. He also appealed to political officeholders to remember that the death of some youth corps members made their political ambitions possible and that those deaths must not be in vain.

"They have stood up for their generation and I think it has been better for this nation," said Mr Fashola. "But in that process, many of them lost their lives. They are heroes."

He added that the only way to immortalise the slain corps members is to "go out there and do the work the electorate demand of us and change the lives of the people, to make things better within the means of our ability."

Elections raised standards
While thanking Attahiru Jega, the INEC chairman, and his team, Mr Fashola said the 2011 elections have set a new threshold for electoral standards in Nigeria.
"With these elections, we have reasoned with ourselves and said that we would not accept certain things anymore. There is still a lot of work to do about our elections, but this is progress and we must build on it," he said.
The governor-elect said his victory meant, to him, a "bigger mandate than the mandate that brought me into office."
"We would double our efforts to make your lives better, we would sacrifice more than we have ever done, we hold this mandate sacred and we would never let you down," he said.
