AHEAD of tomorrow’s governorship and State Assembly elections, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of Nigerian Army, Major General Sarkin Yarkin Bello, has warned soldiers to ensure security in the areas under his jurisdiction and work only to ensure that the interest of the nation was protected.
Bello also charged his men to serve as second tier security to the police to ensure that the elections were conducted peacefully.
The GOC further urged the soldiers to disregard what he called “senseless inciting text messages being circulated”, relating to the post-election riots in some parts of the country alluding to tribal sentiments, saying they were the handiwork of mischief makers.
He said: “As professional soldiers, we are not dictated by our religious, political and ethnic considerations but sheer national interest.”
Major General Bello spoke when he visited Forward Operating Bases, FOBs, on Easter Day, where he interacted with soldiers of Operation Jubilee who are charged with the responsibility of ensuring security in Abia, Imo and Akwa Ibom States.
Operation Jubilee was launched to dislodge criminal elements, especially kidnappers, terrorism and armed robbers, who virtually took over Abia and some part of Akwa Ibom States.
Bello visited Okigwe, Umuahia, Akirika Obot, Azumini, Aba, Ugwuati bases, most of them located in the bushes.
Addressing the soldiers, the GOC conveyed the commendation and Easter message from the Chief of Army Staff to them and charged them to keep up their good job of providing security to the people. He charged them to be of good conduct and not abuse their mandate.
The Army chief also commended the soldiers for the roles they played in assisting the police to provide security during and after the National Assembly and presidential elections and urged them to do better in tomorrow’s elections.
He cautioned them to be impartial in carrying out their assignment.
Bello gave specifics to the soldiers on what their roles in tomorrow’s elections should be, adding that they should assist the police to maintain security and ensure that the elections were conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.
