Political economist Professor Pat Utomi has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, accusing public officials of living extravagantly while Nigerians face severe economic hardship.
In a post on his X account on Tuesday, Utomi highlighted what he called a clear contradiction: officials claim Nigeria is a poor country, yet ministers and other office holders are seen in million-dollar luxury vehicles such as Maybachs, G-Wagons and Rolls-Royces, and frequently travel by private jet.
“You cannot stand before the world and declare that Nigeria is poor, then turn around and parade your ministers in million-dollar Maybachs, G-Wagons and Rolls-Royces, while public officials fly around in private jets. Your optics contradict your narrative, your lifestyle contradicts your statistics,” he wrote.
Utomi argued that if the country is truly facing the level of economic difficulty described by the government, then those in the executive and legislature must show matching restraint in how they manage and spend public resources.
He insisted that holding public office does not give anyone the right to live in luxury at taxpayers’ expense, especially when ordinary citizens are being asked to tighten their belts.
“The APC needs to understand that public office is not a licence for extravagance. If citizens must endure economic hardship, those entrusted with their taxes must also demonstrate restraint,” he stated.
He added that continuing to display such lavish lifestyles while preaching sacrifice to the public risks deepening resentment and reinforcing the view that government officials are out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
