Tinubu Inherited Nigeria on Brink of Collapse from Buhari — Plateau Gov

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited a Nigerian economy that was “tottering on the brink of collapse” from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Mutfwang made the remark on Monday during the formal inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council in Jos. He defended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms and urged Plateau residents to support the President in the 2027 election.

“Where did President Tinubu meet Nigeria in 2023? He met Nigeria, tottering on the brink of collapse, Nigeria that could not service its external debts, Nigeria that would not even allow businesses outside the country to take their proceeds back home,” the governor said.

He recalled that some international airlines stopped flying to Nigeria because they could not access dollars to repatriate their funds. External reserves, he noted, had fallen to just over $3 billion from previous highs of more than $40 billion. Today, he said, reserves stand at over $50 billion.

Mutfwang alleged that the previous administration resorted to printing money, claiming more than N30 trillion was printed and “went down the drain.” He said the Central Bank has since stabilised and the deficit has been cleared.

On fuel subsidy, the governor described the former system as fraudulent, alleging that the country borrowed money to pay claims backed by fictitious documents. “You cannot continue to borrow money to give to thieves. You have to stop it at some point,” he said, adding that fuel is now available even if not cheap. He also claimed the previous government sold crude oil in advance, leaving the current administration to service those obligations.

Mutfwang highlighted measures his government has taken to ease the impact of economic reforms on Plateau residents, including the introduction of metro buses, revival of the railway system in Jos, a 50 per cent reduction in tertiary institution school fees, and a significant increase in student allowances.

He also praised the Federal Government’s NELFUND student financing scheme, which he said has benefited hundreds of Plateau indigenes. On the 2027 elections, the governor called for continued power rotation between the North and South, arguing that the South should complete another eight years after the North’s tenure.

He declared there was no vacancy in the Plateau Government House, insisting on the state’s two-term-per-senatorial-zone arrangement.Mutfwang expressed confidence that Plateau would return President Tinubu with a resounding victory and renew his own mandate.

On security, he acknowledged ongoing challenges and hunger but insisted his administration was taking deliberate steps to address them and facilitate the return of displaced persons.
