SSANU Shuts Down Sokoto State University Over Unpaid Allowances

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Sokoto State University chapter, has withdrawn services at the institution, launching a five-working-day warning strike over unresolved staff entitlements.

The action began on Monday, November 2, 2026, after a 14-working-day ultimatum issued to the Sokoto State Government on October 14 expired without resolution. The union said it would escalate to a total and indefinite shutdown if its demands are not met by the end of the warning period.

In a statement signed by chapter Chairman Ismail Bala Muhammed and Secretary Mansur Ahmad, SSANU stated that repeated engagements, appeals, and consultations with government officials produced no concrete results. “Despite repeated engagements, appeals and consultations with relevant government authorities, no concrete action has been taken to address the legitimate demands of our members,” the union said.

Key demands include payment of arrears from the 25 per cent salary increment, approval and implementation of the 35 per cent Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA), annual salary increments for eligible members, and release of outstanding check-off dues.

The union previously met with the Commissioner for Higher Education, the ministry’s permanent secretary, and the deputy governor. A government committee was later formed to engage unions from Sokoto State University and Shehu Shagari University of Education.

At an October 9 meeting, officials indicated that the 25 per cent salary arrears would not be paid and that CONTTA implementation would start only in January 2027, subject to budgetary provisions. SSANU rejected this stance.

The association noted that similar allowances have been approved for academic staff under ASUU and other workers in state-owned tertiary institutions. It appealed to Governor Ahmed Aliyu for personal intervention and urged traditional rulers, parents, students, and other stakeholders to help resolve the dispute before it worsens.

SSANU warned that failure to meet the demands by the end of the five-day warning strike would leave it with no choice but to enforce a complete and indefinite halt to services at the university.
