North Korea has denied allegations that it was behind the $6.3 billion hack of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, describing the accusation as a US attempt to damage its reputation.
The BBC reported that Kim Yo-jong, the sister of Kim
Jong-un, North Korea’s leader, said on Tuesday that the allegations were
“absurd rhetoric” and a “grave political provocation” against the country.
Kim, director of North Korea’s General Affairs Department,
accused the United States of misleading the international community by linking
Pyongyang to cyberattacks around the world.
“The US has made a trite provocation of linking it with the
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea again,” she said.
“It is a grave political provocation against the DPRK that
the US misleads the international public opinion as if all the cyber crimes in
different parts of the world are our deeds.”
Kim said the North Korean government opposes malicious
activities in cyberspace.
“It is the consistent policy stand of the DPRK government to
resolutely oppose all sorts of malicious acts in cyberspace,” she said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had, on Sunday,
blamed North Korea for the breach, which has been described as the largest
cryptocurrency hack in history.
In a cybersecurity advisory published on October 31, the FBI
said the theft, which occurred on or about October 29, was carried out by North
Korean state-sponsored cyber actors operating under the name TraderTraitor.
TraderTraitor group, also known as the Lazarus Group, had
faced similar allegations in 2025 over a $1.5 billion hack of Bybit.
On November 1, Binance said it had replaced 95 percent of
the funds affected by the security breach and would absorb the financial losses
so customers would not bear the cost.
