Former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has declared that he would abandon his wife if she became president and governed the country the way President Bola Tinubu is currently doing.
Speaking in an interview with Rapid TV, Amaechi said personal loyalty would not stop him from opposing poor leadership, even from the person closest to him.“Today, the closest person in my life is my wife, not my children. So tomorrow, if my wife becomes president and is doing what Tinubu is doing, I’ll be mad to follow my wife, despite my emotional attachment to her. It’s either she changes, or I leave her,” he stated.
Amaechi urged Nigerians to set aside religious, ethnic and party affiliations and reject Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election based solely on his performance in office.“I expect Nigerians not to… forget religion, forget politics, forget ethnicity. Just abandon Tinubu,” he said.He argued that Nigerians already know what another term under Tinubu would mean, while the opposition ticket of Atiku Abubakar and himself remains untested at the presidential level.
“There’s a difference between Tinubu’s team and our team. They have been tested, so you know that the next four years you will die. We have not been tested, so give us a chance,” Amaechi said.He noted that his own record as governor of Rivers State and later as Minister of Transportation is open to public scrutiny and verification.
Drawing a comparison to the computing principle of “garbage in, garbage out,” Amaechi warned that re-electing a leader Nigerians already consider underperforming would only produce more of the same results.
He also called on citizens to turn out in large numbers to vote and to resist any attempts at electoral manipulation, citing high early turnout in the ongoing United States elections as an example of active civic participation.
