The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) chapter, has resumed its indefinite strike over unpaid salaries and the state government’s failure to implement agreements.
The decision was taken at an emergency congress held on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Prefab Hall of the university’s Calabar main campus. Members resolved to resume the industrial action, which was earlier suspended, pending the full implementation of the 2025 agreement with the state government.
The strike originally began on May 19, 2026, and was suspended on July 21, 2026, after Governor Bassey Otu met with union leaders and university management, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Francisca Bassey. The governor had requested 90 days to address the demands, including payment of the Consolidated Academic Training Allowance (CATA) and other welfare issues.
Branch Chairman Dr Patrick Ushie said the 90-day window expired around October 21 without the commitments being met. Lecturers are still owed their September and October 2026 salaries.
“It was suspended that time because of the government intervention, but they have failed in the agreement so we just resumed back. This particular one is still indefinite,” Ushie said. He added that members would not teach, supervise, or engage in academic activities until the issues are resolved, noting that salaries are earned entit and not a gift.
Vice Chancellor Professor Francisca Bassey, who attended the congress, appealed for patience. She said the governor had approved salary payments and that the Accountant General had assured her October salaries would be paid. Union members acknowledged her efforts but insisted on resuming the strike until payments are confirmed.
The union stated that the action would continue indefinitely until the outstanding salaries and other aspects of the agreement are fully addressed.
