No Nigerian is nominated for any category of the 2026 CAF men’s awards.
The list was released by CAF on Wednesday, and it is the
first time no Super Eagle will make the player of the year nomination cut since
2015.
Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Calvin Bassey missed out
despite Nigeria winning bronze at the last African Cup of Nations (AFCON),
which concluded in January 2026, where the trio were included in the
tournament’s best eleven.
Similarly, on Tuesday, no Super Falcons player was also
named among nominees for the women’s prize for the first time since the award’s
inception in 2001.
Stars from Senegal and Morocco dominate the 10-man
nomination list for the men’s 2026 player of the year award.
The Atlas Lions have Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz, and Ismael
Saibari in the cut, while the Senegalese trio of Sadio Mane, Ismaila Sarr, and
Pape Gueye are also contesting.
Other nominees are Amad Diallo of Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo’s
Yoane Wissa, Antoine Semenyo of Ghana, and South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena.
Lamine Ndiaye and Pape Thiaw of Senegal are vying for the
coach of the year, alongside Cape Verde’s Bubista, Sébastien Desabre of DR
Congo, and Egypt’s duo of Hossam Hassan and Moatamed Gamal.
Alexandre Santos of Atlético Petróleos de Luanda and
Mamelodi Sundowns’ Miguel Cardoso Portugal complete the list alongside Mohamed
Ouahbi and Walid Regragui of Morocco.
The 2026 CAF Awards will be held at the Wole Soyinka Centre
for Culture and the Creative Arts in Lagos on December 7.
