Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has criticised opposition figures for promoting the “rig and die” slogan ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that it will deny them any excuse if they suffer defeat.
In a post on his X account on Thursday, Keyamo said those pushing the phrase—first popularised by former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege—would be forced to demonstrate how many people they killed on election day to substantiate claims of rigging. He suggested the slogan should be welcomed, noting that after a free and fair contest it would become impossible for losing candidates to blame electoral fraud in the usual way.
Keyamo remarked that the number of people killed would need to match the scale of alleged rigging for the claim to hold.Omo-Agege introduced the slogan on 23 October during a campaign event in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. Contesting the Delta Central Senatorial District seat under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, he warned that anyone caught manipulating the 2027 election would be killed and that there would be no resort to the courts.
“Anybody who rigs the election on that day, we will kill him! If you don’t value your life, come and rig the election… It is rig and die,” he said at the time. Responding to criticism, Omo-Agege’s media aide, Godwin Anaughe, clarified that the remark targeted those who manipulate results or steal electoral materials, not ordinary voters. The former senator maintained that the slogan was a warning against malpractice and a call to protect the people’s mandate.
