A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Umar Sani, has accused the Nigerian judiciary of losing its independence under the influence of the executive, warning that President Bola Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike will face consequences after leaving office.
In a lengthy post on X titled “A Conscienceless Judiciary,” Sani alleged that the current administration has steadily eroded the separation of powers by allowing political interference to shape court decisions. He specifically pointed to Wike, claiming the minister wields significant influence over parts of the judiciary, with some judges becoming overly deferential to him.
Sani questioned several recent rulings by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, describing them as inconsistent with established facts and the law. He further alleged that courts have grown reluctant to properly hear cases that could go against Wike’s interests.
According to Sani, these developments have deepened public distrust and weakened confidence in the courts as impartial arbiters. The PDP figure listed several politicians—including Hope Uzodimma, Seyi Makinde, David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Goodluck Jonathan—as people who had suffered what he called judicial humiliation and electoral setbacks. He recalled how Nigerians once rallied to defend the judiciary when former President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the EFCC to investigate some judges, contrasting that public support with today’s eroded confidence caused by controversial decisions.
Sani insisted that those who contributed to the decline of judicial independence would not escape accountability.“A day of reckoning will come after Tinubu and Wike have left the political stage. Those responsible for presiding over the destruction of judicial independence and the institutionalisation of a compromised judiciary will eventually have to confront the consequences of their actions,” he wrote. He added that history would judge harshly those who turned the judiciary into a tool of political convenience.
