Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Kingsley Chinda, APC governorship candidate in Rivers; and their supporters met with Siminalayi Fubara, the state governor, and members of his political camp as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts.
The Rivers government has been at loggerheads with the state
house of assembly — whose members are loyal to Wike.
In March 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of
emergency in Rivers and suspended Fubara, his deputy, and the lawmakers
following a protracted political crisis in the state.
The president lifted the emergency in September 2025 and
reinstated the governor and the state house of assembly.
DETAILS OF LATEST MEETING UNDISCLOSED
The closed-door meeting, which held in Port Harcourt, the
Rivers state capital, lasted about four hours and brought together key figures
and supporters from the feuding camps.
Wike and Chinda arrived at the governor’s residence with
their supporters at about 4pm and joined Fubara and his supporters for the
discussions.
It was the first time Fubara would be hosting or personally
participating in a reconciliation meeting involving his supporters, a
significant development in efforts to consolidate the emerging rapprochement in
the state.
The meeting followed years of political disagreements that
deepened divisions among political actors and supporters, including the
prolonged dispute between Fubara and members of the Rivers state house of
assembly.
With tensions between the camps now significantly reduced,
the latest engagement is viewed as part of efforts to move beyond past
differences and build a more coordinated political relationship among the
various interests.
The meeting ended at about 8pm, but none of the participants
addressed journalists afterwards.
Neither Wike, Chinda and their supporters, nor Fubara and
his team disclosed details of the discussions or the specific outcome of the
meeting.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of Wike’s recent
comments that Fubara had corrected his political mistakes by returning to the
political family that produced him as governor.
The FCT minister said he had anticipated Fubara’s return,
arguing that the governor had no viable political alternative outside the
platform that brought him to power.
“He has publicly stated that he has returned to where he
started, and we receive him with an open mind,” he said.
“There is nothing to hide. We will all work together to
ensure that we deliver the votes President Tinubu needs for his re-election.”
