US Warns of Fresh Attacks on Saudi Airports

The United States Mission in Saudi Arabia has issued a security alert warning of additional attacks on major airports in the kingdom, urging travellers to exercise extreme caution.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Monday, the mission said it was “aware of additional attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and a targeted attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam” that occurred on Sunday.

“Please take extreme caution when using all major airports in Saudi Arabia,” the mission advised. It urged US citizens to prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and other travel disruptions, and to check their departure status directly with airlines and airports.

The alert also stated that US government employees in Saudi Arabia now require special authorisation to use King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as well as the airports in Jeddah and Dammam.

Employees are further prohibited from travelling within 20 miles of the Yemen border due to safety risks. The latest warning follows deadly attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.

On Saturday, October 10, an attack killed 12 people and injured more than 300, according to Saudi officials. A further attack on Sunday killed one person and injured 11 others.

The incidents form part of a recent escalation in hostilities involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have claimed responsibility for strikes on Saudi aviation and energy facilities.
