Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says President Bola Tinubu’s administration is aloof and disconnected from the congress.
Ajaero spoke on Saturday on the latest episode of Mic On
Podcast while recalling the NLC’s demonstration in December 2025.
He said the labour congress’s attempts to engage the federal
government failed.
He said the NLC wrote to Tinubu between May and December
2025 but received no response, prompting the congress to announce a nationwide
protest.
“For the past two to three years, it’s not government that
is engaging. This government doesn’t engage,” he said.
“It’s only when people engage; they now say A, B, C, D. So
they are aloof.
“By December 17, 2025, we pulled out that we were going to
the streets. After writing a letter from May to December to the president and
there was no response, we fixed that date that we were going to the streets.
“And after that, some governors intervened, and we had an
interface. So some governors met with us, and since that time, we have talked
once or twice. And those issues, from December last year to now, they are just
doing their business.
“Everybody is their enemy.”
Ajaero comments come in the wake of a three-day warning
strike embarked upon by public servants under the aegis of the Joint National
Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC).
The union had earlier threatened to go on strike if the
federal government failed to slash the price of petrol to N500 and approve a
new wage award for workers.
