Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has alleged a plot to attack opposition figures, including African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, ahead of Nigeria’s January 16, 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Monday, Frank appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to intervene, warning that the alleged plan could destabilize Nigeria’s democracy.
“These allegations must be independently and urgently investigated. Given their gravity, they cannot be dismissed or ignored until it is too late to prevent harm,” Frank said.
He stressed that protecting opposition leaders under President Bola Tinubu’s administration was a constitutional duty, not a privilege.
“The protection of political opposition is not a favour that any government grants at its discretion. It is a fundamental obligation of every democratic state,” he added.
Frank emphasized that his concerns extended beyond Atiku to other opposition leaders who felt unsafe ahead of the polls.
“The concern is not that Atiku Abubakar should be placed above the law. The concern is that the law must never be placed at the service of political persecution,” he stated.
His claims come as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reopened a corruption case against Atiku, following a petition by former Edo lawmaker Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.
