Soludo: Igbo Presidency Will Come Through Political Consensus, Not Opposition

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has urged the South-East to abandon what he described as opposition politics and instead build strategic alliances if the region hopes to produce Nigeria’s president in the future.

Speaking on Thursday, Soludo said the quest for an Igbo presidency would be achieved through negotiation, consensus and cooperation with other political blocs rather than through protests or political isolation.

According to him, the region has spent too much time expressing grievances without securing the desired political outcomes.

“We have protested for too long, but this time, we must be part of the game. There is no prize for second or third position. Igbos will become president, but it will be by agreement,” he said.

The governor stressed the importance of maintaining a working relationship with the Federal Government, arguing that such engagement is necessary to secure development projects and address challenges facing the South-East.

Citing issues such as erosion and poor road infrastructure in Anambra State, Soludo questioned how the region could expect federal intervention without collaborating with the administration in power.

“This erosion and bad roads in Anambra, is it not President Tinubu we will meet to help intervene?” he asked.

Soludo maintained that political relevance comes from active participation in governance and national decision-making processes, not from standing outside the system.

He argued that building alliances with other regions and aligning with the centre remains the most practical route for the South-East to realise its long-standing ambition of producing a Nigerian president.

According to the governor, the presidency cannot be secured through confrontation or isolation but through broad-based political agreements capable of attracting support across the country.

His comments add to the ongoing debate over the political strategy the South-East should adopt ahead of future presidential elections and its quest for greater national representation.
