The Senate has urged security agencies to launch an immediate offensive against armed bandits operating in border communities of Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states following the killing of about 80 people in Binnari community, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The call was made during Wednesday’s plenary after Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau raised a motion of urgent national importance over the worsening security situation and recurring attacks on rural communities.
Lawmakers called on security agencies to establish additional security camps in the affected areas and strengthen surveillance efforts to prevent further attacks, safeguard residents and restore peace. Presenting the motion, Lau condemned the killing of innocent civilians, noting that the continued attacks had created fear, displaced residents and disrupted normal life in affected communities.
“The continued activities of armed bandits in rural communities undermine the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property,” he said.
The Senate warned that failure to tackle the recurring violence could result in more deaths, destruction of property, displacement of residents and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Lawmakers stressed that no community should be left vulnerable to criminal groups and urged security agencies to take decisive action against those responsible for the attacks. Beyond security measures, the Senate also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to provide immediate relief materials to affected communities.
A minute of silence was observed in honour of the victims. The attack on Binnari community reportedly occurred on October 23 shortly after Jumu’ah prayers when gunmen invaded the area, shooting indiscriminately and looting shops and homes. The attackers were also said to have set motorcycles and businesses ablaze, causing widespread panic and destruction.
Security concerns have intensified following reports that the assailants may have crossed into Taraba from neighbouring Plateau State, highlighting the need for coordinated operations across state borders.
The Senate’s intervention comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of the North-East and North-Central regions, where armed groups continue to threaten rural communities, disrupt livelihoods and force residents from their homes.
