Arise News anchor Rufai Oseni has strongly criticised Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent remarks about the 2023 presidential election.
Obi, speaking in a BBC Africa interview, maintained that he believes he won the election under the Labour Party but admitted there is no evidence to prove the claim.
“There’s no evidence. Everything is not based on evidence,” Obi said, before reiterating, “I won the election and that’s where I will end.”
Reacting on Arise Television, Oseni urged Obi to stop making such assertions without supporting proof.
“Mr Peter Obi, it is best you do not say things if you do not have the evidence. I must repeat it, because when you say that I won the election, you don’t have the evidence to back it up, then people do not take what you say seriously,” Oseni said.
The journalist further questioned whether Obi had conducted any detailed analysis of the results before making the declaration.
“Didn’t you have backend analysis of result by result before you made the claim? Where are all your own data spreadsheets on the backend that assert your claim? Where is your own backend collation that asserts your claim?” he asked.
Oseni stressed that simply claiming victory is insufficient without concrete evidence, noting that while Obi might feel he won, the assertion carries little weight without proof.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress the winner of the 2023 presidential election.
Obi and other candidates challenged the outcome in court, but both the Presidential Election Petition Court and the Supreme Court upheld Tinubu’s victory.
