Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have rescued a 15-year-old boy abducted from Akinyele Local Government Area and killed one suspected kidnapper during a gun battle.
The victim, Sumaila Muhammadu, was taken from the Onidundun area of Akinyele on October 18, 2026. The kidnappers were demanding a ransom for his release.
According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ayanlade Olayinka on Sunday, the command received credible intelligence about the case around 5pm on October 22.
Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga directed the Anti-Kidnapping Section, working with the Oyo Zone Vigilante Group of Nigeria, to rescue the boy and arrest the suspects.
The team moved to the Pipeline, Ajagba axis along the Awe–Iwo Road. At about 9:30pm, the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the advancing security personnel, sparking a gun duel.
“Despite the attack, the operatives successfully rescued the victim, identified as Sumaila Muhammadu, a 15-year-old male, while one yet-to-be-identified suspected kidnapper was neutralised,” the statement said.
The dead suspect was taken to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed him dead. His body was later deposited at the morgue. Operatives recovered an Android mobile phone and a cutlass during the operation.
Other gang members fled in different directions, some reportedly with gunshot injuries. A manhunt is ongoing for the remaining suspects.
The command urged residents around the Awe–Iwo Road and nearby communities to report anyone with suspicious gunshot wounds.
It also asked medical practitioners and hospital staff to notify police if anyone seeks treatment for injuries linked to the incident.
Commissioner Olugbenga assured residents that the command would continue intelligence-led operations and work with other security agencies to dismantle criminal networks and prevent kidnapping in the state.
He called on the public to provide timely and credible information.
