Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed claims that Peter Obi represents the strongest presidential option from the South-East, insisting that the former Anambra governor “can never be the best.”
Speaking in an interview with ARISE News on Friday, Umahi argued that Obi failed to consult regional political leaders before his 2023 presidential bid.
“Peter Obi is not the best of our finest in South-East. He’s not the best, he can never be the best,” he said.
The former Ebonyi governor maintained that any aspirant carrying the hopes of the South-East must seek input from governors and stakeholders.
“You cannot play politics in South-East without consulting people like us. If I were contesting, I would have consulted,” he added.
Umahi stressed that the region has other qualified figures who could aspire to the presidency, rejecting the idea that Anambra State should automatically produce a candidate.
He noted that Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, and Imo must also be considered in future discussions.
Defending South-East leaders who support President Bola Tinubu ahead of 2027, Umahi said their choices should not be seen as betrayal.
He argued that the region’s path to the presidency lies in negotiation and alliances across Nigeria, not in rallying behind a single candidate.
“The South-East must build bridges if it wants to produce a president. No one politician should be treated as the only viable option,” he said, adding that while the region will eventually produce Nigeria’s president, “it is not yet our turn.”
