The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a proposed temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for essential repairs and resurfacing works.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and will last for approximately 25 days, subject to final confirmation.
FAAN explained that the intervention became necessary due to the deteriorated condition of sections of the runway, which include potholes and extensive surface cracking.
These defects have been further aggravated by recent heavy rainfall. The rehabilitation works will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment, and resurfacing of the affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational standard.
The authority noted that the repairs are particularly important ahead of the expected rise in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season. In addition, the project will include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region continues to grow.
FAAN urged passengers, airlines, and the public to take note of the planned closure and advised travellers to check with their airlines for any schedule adjustments during the period.
