The Ogun State Government has stepped up surveillance and preparedness measures following confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja, assuring residents that no case has been recorded in the state as of October 21, 2026.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, said the state had been on heightened alert since the Democratic Republic of Congo reported Ebola earlier in March 2026.
She disclosed that 111 travellers from high-risk countries were traced, monitored, and later discharged after completing the required observation period.
Coker explained that the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre is coordinating response activities to ensure rapid detection and management of suspected cases.
She noted that health workers, surveillance officers, and community informants have been trained on proper procedures, while infection prevention measures in hospitals are being reinforced.
Residents were urged to remain calm, avoid panic, and rely only on verified information from public health authorities. Coker highlighted Ebola’s symptoms, including fever, weakness, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and in some cases unexplained bleeding stressing that early medical assessment is crucial.
She warned that Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of infected persons, contaminated materials, or the bodies of victims, and advised against unsafe burials.
Preventive measures such as regular handwashing, use of sanitiser, and avoiding contact with suspected cases were strongly recommended.
The commissioner provided emergency contacts for reporting suspected cases: the Ogun State Epidemiologist via 08084250881 and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control toll-free line 6232.
Healthcare workers were reminded to maintain vigilance, promptly isolate suspected cases, and notify surveillance teams. Coker emphasised that early detection, timely reporting, and community cooperation remain vital to preventing the spread of the disease.
