North-east governors announce plan to establish regional airline

The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has announced plans to establish a regional airline as part of efforts to improve connectivity across the six states.

According to a statement by Hussaini Mai Suleh, press secretary to the deputy governor, Yobe state, Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno state and chairman of the forum, said N15.8 billion had been secured in counterpart funding for the proposed North-East Air Shuttle.

Zulum spoke at the 13th regular meeting of the NEGF in Maiduguri on Saturday, according to a statement by Hussaini Mai Suleh, press secretary to the deputy governor of Yobe.

He said the remaining counterpart funds were expected to be received before the end of the year, with the aim of commencing operations of the air shuttle.

Zulum also said the forum had committed to developing 10 megawatts of solar power in each of the six member states.

He said the region had recorded improvements in security, attributing the progress to the efforts of the armed forces, security agencies and community resilience.

The governor said security remained the cornerstone of development, adding that the region should move from relief to recovery and then to sustainable prosperity.

He said the focus should be on rebuilding resilient communities through housing, education, healthcare and economic opportunities for displaced persons.

GOVERNORS SEEK ACTION ON 17-PROJECT STRATEGY

Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, governor of Gombe and chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, said the NEGF’s institutional structure, including its secretariat, technical committees and sector working groups, was among its major accomplishments.

Yahaya said a 17-project strategy package had been submitted to President Bola Tinubu in September 2025 for urgent action.

He said the package included the Maiduguri Rail Corridor and Frontier Oil Exploration.

Yahaya said the forum had adopted a unified strategy combining military action with efforts to tackle poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, drug abuse and illegal mining.

The governor said the strategy also includes strengthening intelligence sharing among states and improving community engagement.
