Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has dismissed claims by Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi that his comments about Nigerians in the diaspora were distorted, insisting that Obi’s original remarks were accurately reported.
In a post on X, Onanuga said: “Mr Peter Obi, you failed to clarify your Manchester callous statement. Nobody twisted your statement. Thank you for affirming it again.”
Obi had earlier accused political opponents of misrepresenting his comments, stressing that he appreciated Nigerians abroad for their sacrifices and remittances, which help families at home cover school fees, medical bills, rent, and food.
He clarified that he did not urge them to abandon their loved ones but highlighted the need for Nigeria to create opportunities that reduce dependence on relatives overseas.
“Our goal must be to build a nation that provides jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education, and economic opportunities for its citizens,” Obi wrote, adding that his remarks were meant to encourage government action rather than discourage diaspora support.
Onanuga, however, maintained that Obi’s latest statement only reinforced his earlier comments, rejecting claims of misrepresentation.
